Doing community service is good for the world, but did you know it can also be good for your health? Giving your time to a worthy cause can increase your overall happiness.
Fittingly, I learned this while reading a story in Woman's Day entitled "What Doctors Wish You'd Do" — while waiting for a doctor's appointment.

Even if you can't spare a few bucks, one thing you can always donate is your time. And what better way to spend a few hours over the weekend (or if you're lucky, during the week) than playing with a few furry friends at a local shelter? Purina's Be My Hero program helps you do just that.

Sage Hospitality hotels are encouraging volunteerism with its Give a Day Get a Night promotion. If you do at least eight hours of community service at a 501c3 organization (like Meals on Wheels or Habitat for Humanity) between July 1 and December 20, 2009, you're eligible for a complimentary night stay or 50 percent discount on hotel rooms at any of Sage's 52 hotels. The properties include hotels like The Nines in Portland, OR and The Blackstone in Chicago.

I'm all about giving back for no real reason at all, but Sunday kicks off National Volunteer Week. In honor of this extra push to get out there and do good, check out my ideas for how to help animals in need when you start this slideshow!

The House of Representatives will vote on the Give Act today, which would triple the size of AmeriCorps and create four other service programs. The new Corps would be:
- The Clean Energy Corps
- The Education Corps
- The Healthy Futures Corps
- The Veterans Service Crops
The bill also increases the amount of money volunteers, like the ones Michelle Obama hung out with yesterday, receive toward education.
Supporters of the bill say that America's service infrastructure needs a critical boost.

Michelle Obama volunteered at Miriam's Kitchen, a nonprofit that provides case management, housing support, and meals to homeless people in DC. Yesterday's meal was donated by the White House in a new effort to highlight the work of local nonprofits. The first lady urged Americans to donate food and, if that's out of reach, time.

As the saying goes, it is better to give than to receive. But if you decide to give back to the community, Starbucks thinks you should receive something in return.
On the tail of Barack Obama's inauguration, the coffee king is launching its new "I'm in" promotion, in which customers get free coffee for giving back to the community.

As much as I adore my pooch, I've got some love to share. Even though there's no room in my home for another pet, I still want to get involved (especially since it's Adopt a Shelter Dog Month). Getting started is definitely the hardest part .

Hot on the heels of last week's candidates' service forum, Time magazine has an issue devoted to "21 Ways to Fix Up America."
The best bit is the 21 item "User's Guide," filled with tips, tidbits, and pieces from everyone from Ted Kennedy advocating for his Serve America Act to Miley Cyrus on starting young, the list is full of unique ways to volunteer. If you've got time to spare, here are five ways you can serve America too:
- Citizen Schools:
The program has 3,200 adult volunteers running after-school programs for 4,500 kids at middle schools in 21 cities.
