I always get an irritating (physically and figuratively) sore throat as the seasons change. While my sore throat is usually related to allergies, many of us get sore throats when we get colds (even if it's still warm out).
Cold season is creeping up on us now that the kids are back to school.

Sore throats are a common side effect of colds and flu, but also of dry, over-heated homes. Postnasal drip from colds and open-mouth breathing due to nasal congestion can both create sore throats. Although sore throats like these are generally worse in the morning and calm down as the day progresses, it is still nice to soothe the pain.

A cup of hot tea can be soothing on a cold day, but a new study urges you to think about the temperature of your beverage before you start sipping. Drinking scalding hot tea that is greater than 158°F (70°C) has been shown to increase the risk of throat cancer. Participants in the study who made black tea and drank it two minutes after pouring were five times as likely to develop throat cancer as compared to those who let their tea sit for four or more minutes.

Last month we went over the signs and symptoms of realizing when a stomach ache may require a visit to the doctor. And just recently we reviewed when to seek medical attention for earaches. In case you were still eating refined carbs (foods made with white flour), here's some news that may help curb your craving. Eating products made with refined white flour like white bread, bagels, pasta, and cakes may increase your chance of throat cancer (also called cancer of the esophagus). Interestingly enough, this kind of cancer is also linked to obesity and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), which may also be caused by eating a lot of refined carbs.
