A Portland fourth grader went to the head of the class to "marry" her teacher. The child proposed to Paul Rosenblum who agreed to play groom in the pretend nuptials on the playground. He sported a graduation gown and tie and the bride wore a sheet.

I think I've figured out America's next fad diet — staying single. A new study reveals that people who get married are twice as likely to become obese as those who are merely dating. Young people who move in with a partner also have a higher risk of gaining weight.

Last night TLC aired, Jon & Kate Plus 8: The First 10 Years, a retrospective about the couple and their children. While last week's Big Announcement was a tearjerker, this special was equally sad. It was not because it focused on the demise of Jon and Kate's marriage and the breakup of the family, but because it showcased their happiest times with home videos, clips of the honeymooners in Disney World and welcoming the twins and sextuplets.

It's not often a history dissertation warrants consideration outside a university, but Pam Epstein, a PhD candidate at Rutgers University, has turned hers into a blog worth blogging about. She's using old personal ads to explore love and marriage in mid-19th- to early-20th-century America, and has dug up some real gems — both the ads and the men. What I love is that instead having categories like "missed connections" or "casual encounters," they have "matrimony."
