Blake Lively dispels the rivalry rumor between her and Leighton Meester in the December issue of W magazine. She blames the media for starting it, but it got me thinking about competitive and contentious relationships between women. It seems like many of us have had a frenemy at one point in our lives, but tell me, have you ever had a full-blown rivalry with someone before?

Dear Sugar,
I created a Facebook account sometime ago and came across an old friend. We had a tumultuous relationship and she often times didn't see anything wrong with calling me a friend without treating me like one. She was selfish and rude to me.

I’m sure all of us have experienced a blowout argument with a friend at least once in our lives. And I’m sure most of us have encountered a friendship that ended up being more of a burden than a benefit. In fact, sometimes our friends can actually become toxic to us, either by their own personal choices or their treatment of those around them.

I think I’m out of the loop because I only heard the term frenemy recently. As you can guess, frenemy is a slang term used to describe a person who is both an enemy and a friend. At first I found this idea plain silly; how could someone be both of those things at once?

In today's installment of Gwyneth Paltrow's e-newsletter GOOP, she cites an instance in which she discovered that a friend was "pretty hell-bent" on taking her down, causing that person to become her frenemy. The pal ultimately suffered a very public humiliating incident — and many are speculating that Gwyneth was not-so-discreetly referring to Winona Ryder's arrest and trial for shoplifting. We're taking a look back at the friendship between the two women, and wondering if you guys think that Winona is the friend behind Gwyneth's unfortunate tale.

Whitney and crew kicked off a new season of The City last night, featuring an old friend: Roxy, a straight-shooting but slightly undermining brunette and a new rival for Olivia, Erin, the publicist for Elle magazine. This season's cast of characters wastes no time getting the drama started! I'm looking forward to how Olivia handles her new role at Elle while under Erin's watchful eye.

Ah, underminers — those frenemies who, either intentionally or subconsciously, try to bring you down with faux concern and back-handed compliments. Their motivations aren't always clear, but their nastiness definitely is, especially when you're left feeling bad about yourself after an encounter with one. An underminer is especially terrible when you've made a new or interesting beauty choice, since they'll try to drive a dagger into any little bit of self-consciousness you have and exploit it to make you hate your new look — no matter how cool it actually is or how happy it makes you.

Every day editors of the Merriam-Webster dictionary spend hours reading books, magazines, newspapers, and online publications to find out how people are using the English language. Eventually, if a word is used enough, it gets added to the dictionary! This year, Merriam-Webster added 100 new words, including frenemy, ginormous, smackdown, sudoku, and speed dating.

It was the much talked about season finale of The Hills last night — Lauren Conrad said goodbye to the cast while Kristin Cavallari said hello. We didn't get to see that much of Kristin, but if she's anything like her sassy Laguna Beach self, then I'm so tuning in next season. As a farewell to Lauren and a welcome ceremony for Kristin, I present The Hills style battle.
