"Any refusal to dispense — regardless of whether it is motivated by religion, morals, conscience, ethics, discriminatory prejudices, or personal distaste for a patient — violates the rules."
This week a US appeals court ruled that a pharmacist's personal convictions does not outweigh a patient's right to timely medication.
Two Washington state pharmacists filed a lawsuit saying that their religious beliefs should exempt them from carrying emergency contraception.

USA Today recently discussed the challenge of selling male sterilization. A vasectomy, a quick operation that prevents pregnancy by blocking the tubes that carry sperm, is simpler and safer than female sterilization. Even so, they are much less common than female sterilization, since men are less comfortable with medical procedures, especially when, let's face it, it involves their penises.

Imagine throwing away your birth control pills and asking your significant other to take on the burden of contraception.
Scientists are getting closer to making that a reality with their work on testosterone injections to temporarily block sperm production. (Six months after the injections, men's sperm counts return to normal.) Trials in China so far show promise: one man in a 100 fathered a child while on the injections.

On Wednesday, the FDA announced that Plan B, the morning-after pill, will be available without a prescription to women 17 and older. Plan B is essentially a high dose of birth control pills that both stops ovulation and decreases the chance a fertilized egg will attach to the uterus. When used within 72 hours after unprotected sex, it can lower the risk of pregnancy by almost 90 percent.

I'm grateful that Plan B is available in drugstores and pharmacies, but you have to be at least 18 years old to buy it without a prescription. In spite of that, minors are also having sex, which is why a judge in Brooklyn has ordered the FDA to reconsider its decision and allow underage girls access to this emergency contraception too. The court ruling ordered the FDA to act within 30 days, so now all women 17 and up will soon have access to this safe and effective drug!

Teenagers are never what they used to be. Parents and old curmudgeons alike love to lament the morals lost among today's teens. But the rise in reported births for 15- to 19-year-olds from the National Center For Health Statistics is not because teens are having so much sex, but more likely because they are using contraception less frequently.

Gift certificates and gift cards may seem like a risky investment because some newly bankrupt companies refuse to honor outstanding gift cards, but apparently there's an even more controversial gift option on the market this year. Planned Parenthood in Indiana is offering gift certificates for the first time ever. The organization said a big increase in calls and visits from newly unemployed and uninsured citizens prompted what it deems the "unusual, yet practical" gift option.
