This story popped up recently, and I wasn't gonna cover it at first because the research underpinning it is narrow and lends itself to a lot of pat, stereotypical conclusions about mothers and daughters. The story seems to be reporting wholesale that we're all going to age just like our mothers (dun dun dun!), so I figured I had to clear a few things up so you get the real info.
Look, this study is based on data culled from just 10 sets of mothers and daughters who were brought in because they were already similar-looking.

Spending an hour or two a day online might not be so bad after all. A new study suggests that spending time on the Internet increases brain activity in areas of the brain related to memory and cognition.
The study followed 24 volunteers between the ages of 55 to 78.

Getting older isn't the terrifying thing so many people think it is. With that said, yes, your looks will change over time, but the tradeoff is that you'll get wiser, too. (I like to think of it as beauty evolution.) There are things you already know are coming, but guess what?

Mothers joke that they owe their gray hair and wrinkles to their offspring. Whether the topic is postpartum bodies, sheer exhaustion or limited amounts of me time, many moms attribute the decline of their looks to putting their children first. Who hasn't overheard or been involved in a conversation where someone commented that a woman looked amazing or was aging well and another chimed in with, "Well, she doesn't have kids!"

We've come a long way from the days when you couldn't trust anyone over 30. Now, 40 just isn't the new 30 — it seems that 50, too, is the new 30. Take a look at some stars and see if you can guess their ages.

Even if you aren't afraid of getting older — it is, after all, an inevitable fact of life — it can be scary to think that you might grow old alone. I used to say that if I were single in my golden years, I'd want to have one of my good girlfriends by my side. We could reminisce about the good ol' times, complain about the kids these days, and sip cocktails out of coconuts.

When we're in college, staying out all night and sleeping the day away is totally acceptable. But as we get older, our hard-partying ways can soften. The older I get, the more I worry about getting enough sleep, as opposed to getting enough booze.

After the Sex and the City screening last week, several Sugar girls admitted that the movie made them cry. The consensus seemed to be that even those of us who never cried much when we were younger now get choked up very easily by TV shows, weddings, songs — you name it.
I think that many women cry more often as we get older.

Madonna appeared on Nightline last night to talk about her new album and documentary, I Am Because We Are. I was sad to hear her say that she likes her thighs now because they "aren't as chubby" as they used to be, but I did like what she had to say about the double standard that aging women face:
I don't think we live in just a sexist society, we live in an ageist society, connected to women. I think women in an unconscious way are valued for their youth, youthful beauty, not so much for their wisdom and experience.

Are you looking for the fountain of youth? So is GlaxoSmithKline, and the pharmaceutical company is betting that it has found it — in red wine no less. Researchers have found a compound in red wine that slows the aging process, possibly prolonging life.
