Two weekends ago, I joined a friend at a potluck dinner organized by Slow Food San Francisco. While I do support the movement's good, clean, and fair principles, I also realized I'd probably be dining amongst a fair share of victory garden-sowing, microwave-loathing culinary crusaders. Eager to please the environmentally aware diners at the potluck, I decided to bring a wholesome spread of unadulterated vegetables fresh from that morning's farmers market, served alongside a rustic Italian tuna sauce.

Word on the street is that President Obama doesn't like beets. His aversion to this veggie is so strong that beets were not planted in the first lady's victory garden. Similar to the broccoli debacle that marred George Bush, Sr.'s nutrition record, beet advocates are up in arms about the president's dislike of the red root veggie.

While the medals and finish lines from the Olympics are becoming a distant memory — so was the hard-fought clean air that Beijing enjoyed during the Games. Residents have been discussing just how to keep the measures in effect, and now they might have won. A partial victory at least.

Last month, right before Slow Food Nation, PartySugar helped harvest the newly planted Victory Gardens in downtown San Francisco. Apparently the success of the public garden was so strong that various groups are taking the matter to the White House — both metaphorically and literally.
Several organizations are campaigning for the next president to create a garden on the White House lawn.

Carrie Underwood slipped into uniform and stepped up to the plate alongside some of her fellow country stars for the 18th annual City of Hope Celebrity Softball Challenge on Wednesday. She played tough before the game, saying, "I’ve got a lot of practice with a bat one way or another the last couple years." Unfortunately, Carrie's confidence wasn't enough to lead her team to victory, but she still looked cute as a button running the bases.

I don't really look to Lipstick Jungle for outfit inspirations, but I was mesmerized by Lindsay Price's character Victory Ford's exotic, gold plated bangle she wore on the pilot episode. The Dholak Bangle by Rosena Sammi ($500), is inspired by the shape of the dholak, a North Indian hand drum. This, for me, is as gorgeous as jewelry gets.

Last night's episode saw our favorite culinary guinea pigs blind tasting food, getting yelled at (no surprises here), and poorly cooking a dinner service (again, no surprises). The show starts with Jen, last week's almost eliminated female, in tears. She connects with Bonnie who complains about how difficult it is being in Hell's Kitchen.
