Depending on who you ask, Summer camp is either a wonderful, life-changing part of childhood or a horrifying, embarrassing experience to be avoided entirely. For many kids, attending sleep-away camp was a first taste of independence. You're tossed into an unfamiliar place and forced to make new friends while sampling all sorts of exotic activities — from horseback riding and campfires to dancing with boys and having your underwear run up a flagpole.

'Tis the season for sleep away camp — and for 100 kids attending a weeklong camp in the tiny Rocky Mountain town of Larkspur organized it's no exception. The only difference is, the camp is free, and sponsored by the National Military Family Association. The association is hosting 10,000 campers in 37 states this summer — with a special mission: to help both veterans and their kids deal with the stresses of deployment.

If you want your kid to be a happy camper, send him or her a care package! Children enjoy the sports, budding friendships, and freedom that Summer camp has to offer, but most don't mind having a little something from home mailed to them every so often either. Postcards and letters are great for keeping kids informed of family news, but most mothers like to send something that makes more of a statement.

When Joaquin Phoenix became an unintentional astronaut in Space Camp what child didn't pack their bags and ask their parents to sign them up? For nature lovers there are log cabin camps with mess halls and communal showers. For the youngster destined to take the stage as a triple threat there are getaways that offer vocal, dance and acting lessons.

I love cookbooks that provide provocative recipes as well as interesting information. In The Great American Camping Cookbook, Scott Cookman — funny last name for a cookbook author, right? — teaches you how to make cornmeal blueberry biscuits while giving you a history lesson on traditional American camp food.

Flashback to Summers past. Many parents fund their kid's camp experience because they have their own fond memories of sitting around the fire. Give your child a taste of what cabin life was like for you as a camper with some retro-inspired toys that will keep them busy during their down time.

I love looking at vintage images of camping from days-gone-by. It wasn't all about internal frame backpacks and super-efficient filtering pumps in those days. Instead, it looked like more of a glamorous party, staged in the woods!

As the final bell of the school year rings and moms throughout the country turn their attention to the lazy days of Summer, a large number of kids start packing their bags for the nearly 7,000 overnight camps that exist throughout America.
If the thought of overnight camps conjures up scenes from Meatballs and The Parent Trap, you've got the right idea. Whether the camp is a private institution or affiliated with a religious establishment, it is highly likely that tots will be swimming, horseback riding, playing an organized sport, doing arts and crafts, climbing a wall or participating in a ropes course of some sort.

My thoughtful parents believed sending me to overnight camp would make my Summer. Maybe I was too young or maybe it was the wrong camp, but I didn't love it the way my pals gloated about theirs. I appreciated my mom and dad's generosity and learned a lot from the experience, but overnight camp was not for me.
