Pole Dancers Reach For Olympic Gold

From the stripper pole to the Olympic podium? Proponents of "pole fitness" want more respect, and perhaps a gold medal would help. In an interview with Marie Claire, dance instructor Collette Kakuk, cofounder of the Pole Fitness Association, makes a case for pole dancing as an Olympic sport.

Poles aren't just for strippers anymore. There are stripping-based fitness classes, sport poles, and even national pole-dancing competitions. The moves require no small amount of strength, flexibility, control, and balance. Kakuk argues:

But if you look at rhythmic gymnastics and figure skating, so many of the movements are similar to what we do on the pole. We have to shatter the taboo. The pole is just another fitness apparatus, like a vertical balance beam.

I don't doubt that you have to be incredibly fit to pole dance. But I can't help but think the pole dancers might be a bit overeager for Olympic glory. As Kakuk points out, "we need to unify the sport. We don't even have common names for our moves." Well, at least they have a readymade soundtrack!

I have so many questions. Where are these people? It'd be weird enough if there were a club outfitted with poles for every dancer on the dance floor, but this appears to be a reception of some kind. Like a wedding reception. But with pole-dancing? I suppose it all worked out in the end, though. That cute lady looked like she needed something to hold onto!

Another Stripper Bites the Dust

Who manufactures and installs these lame stripper poles? There's now a whole new genre of video that shows hard-workin' pole dancers practicing their craft at home, only to have the poles collapse by the end of their routines. Since this is happening so much, just to spice things up, they could incorporate a comedy routine into their shows at the strip joints where they work. A kind of Lucille Ball meets Jenna Jameson type thing.

This Commercial Is Plain Wrong

This Orangina commercial is really making waves on the Internet and not because of its juicy product appeal. It's got everything from bipedal, dancing deer to flamingo draped stripper poles to peacock showgirls and octopus lap dances - seriously. Can we not corrupt the wild with our own effed up representations of gender? I'd much rather see a commercial of folks talking out of their asses. It would be less offensive.

Another pole dancing wannabe bites the ~~dust~~ carpet. Since when is the "hostess with the mostest" responsible for whipping up a few good pole tricks for the dinner party? Call me old-fashioned, but I'll take good conversation--or a decent dessert-- over a good eyefull of stripper any day.

When did stripping not only go mainstream, but even become something it seems so many chicks actually aspire to? So much so that, like the doofus in this video, they're BUYING POLES and PRACTICING in their bedrooms. (How about calligraphy or stamp collecting?) Anyway, this is what happens without proper installation...

Wii Stripper Pole Game: Fun or Sexist?

I've been a little bit hesitant to write about the Wii Fit Stripper Pole game because I'm a little conflicted. But since it appears that it's going to happen, here we go! A Stripper Pole game disturbs me a little, but since it's part of Wii Fit, I think of it as the same level as those stripping exercise classes that popped up a few years ago and seemed cheeky and fun. It's also a fun, hopefully private (close those shades) way to work out and explore a fantasy, so what's the harm, right?

On the other hand, with the release of GTA IV and its supply of hookers once again, I'm leery of the intent here and I can get in that place of worrying about where the video game industry is placing their female fans. How do you feel about a stripper pole game?
