If one actress could be considered responsible for prototyping old Hollywood glamour, it's Rita Hayworth. Born in Brooklyn in 1918 as Margarita Carmen Cansino, by the age of 19 she had signed with Columbia Pictures and changed her name to Rita Hayworth. Four years later she dyed her naturally brown hair a fiery shade of auburn, and a femme fatale was born.

Do you know your film noir, doll? This cinematic genre often starred alluring actresses such as Veronica Lake, Rita Hayworth, and Ava Gardner. Common features of these types of films include a highly stylized appearance of both the characters and scenery, a crime, and some sort of dramatic, sexual undertone in the backdrop — think The Maltese Falcon and Out of the Past, or in more modern films, Basic Instinct or No Country For Old Men.

At the Avon Hope Honors Gala, all the celebrity Avon ladies (and the Avon man) were out, including Courteney Cox, Reese Witherspoon, Fergie, and Patrick Dempsey. Think of the Hollywood stars of the '40s like Rita Hayworth or Greta Garbo and you'd imagine that they would be having their makeup applied in front of flashbulb lined mirrors, perhaps wearing black silk elbow length gloves while smouldering prettily. They'd certainly be using a classic vanity case such as Dior's new Backstage Beauty Box (£250). Luckily for modern day starlets this set is now available to buy exclusively at Selfridges, as part of their Christmas collection.

It's always a pleasure to see America Ferrera; she seems so sunny and pretty and lovely. And tonight, she's channeling Rita Hayworth with that wavy hair and 1940s-style red lipstick.
The key to making a bold lip color work is to pair it with a toned-down eye as America has done.

Remember Glamour Shots? The beyond cheesy photography sessions at your local mall that took you from sweatpants victim to vixen with a tube of lipstick, a boa, and a soft-focus camera lens?
It's thankfully gone the way of Clear Pepsi and died with the '80s.

Natasha Bedingfield, who sings that catchy tune "Unwritten," is channeling some old Hollywood glamor with her Grammys look. The Rita Hayworth-esque face framing curls, neutral lipstick, and hint of jet-black eyeliner all make for a very sophisticated and age-appropriate look. She has been known to pull off some risky style choices in the past, so what do you think of this toned-down Natasha?
