Call it the Big-Box Tipping Point, but you know the global food crunch has solidified from sad headline to international reality when your local Costco gets walloped.
Shoppers at the Costco in Mountain View, CA felt the first tremors of the clamp down this week — no rice! The usually packed shelves held but a few jumbo bags of rice and shoppers faced something the US hasn't really seen since WWII: rationing.

After a long stint in New York, about a year ago I headed out West with the rest of the warm weather seeking migrants. I actually landed back in my home state, but for six years my shopping life in New York flourished. Though it may be safer for me to not have NYC's awesome shops at my fingertips, I miss them.

Dear Savvy,
I've just paid off one of my credit cards that was in the Debt Management Program through a credit counseling service, which is something I'm proud of! It's nice to have accomplished that! The only issue is, I got a letter from that company offering to reopen the credit card line since I paid everything off.

LA Fashion Week is a lot smaller than say New York or Paris, but don't be fooled by its diminutive size. We spotted some fabulous collections overflowing with cutting-edge design and artistry. From Grecian gowns to Rick Owens-inspired jackets, LA had lots.

I've rationalized that living in a fourth-floor walk-up negates a gym membership, chocolate cake for dinner is really just lunch's dessert, and that dying is inevitable when I bum a late-night cigarette. Fortunately, I'm not alone. Tina Fey told Harper's Bazaar she'd like to work out but doesn't have time, and, besides, it's not like it's going to make her immortal.

When I came across these gorgeous Gucci Platforms ($928), I couldn't help but envision the leggy look I'd achieve wearing them. Despite my attempts to rationalize the purchase — their versatility, the timeless design, the supple pebble leather (I could go on) — at this price, the look would have to remain a fantasy. You can never have too many books on your reading list, and this suggestion might bring some variety to those you've already cracked open. Former reporter for Reuters and Newsday Lauren Weber just published her book In Cheap We Trust: The Story of a Misunderstood American Virtue, which focuses on the evolution of thrift, from the Puritans to the freegans. She keeps the text fresh by including personal anecdotes — she describes her economist father as "compulsively cheap" and admits that once he tried to ration toilet paper.
