Oh, it's way too easy to ruminate and obsess, to become lost in a maze of seriousness, heaviness and despair. One of my favorite things about my partner is his knack for seeing the goofiness or humor in most situations. And he knows when and where to switch gears, which is a good thing.

In terms of end-of-the-world movies, 2012 packs it all — a love story, teary family moments, action-packed adventure, over-the-top-CGI, and a ton of recycled film cliches — in a two and a half hour package. That's lengthy by today's standards, but I wasn't bored for a minute. This is pure escapist entertainment.

What child hasn't heard the story of their parents hiking five miles to school, uphill (in both directions) during a blizzard? Such tall tales may seem even more foreign to kids as fewer moms are allowing their lil ones to walk to school on their own. According to the National Household Travel Survey, child abductions, unsafe traffic conditions, and neighborhood conditions can be blamed for the decline in the number of walkers from 41 percent in 1969 to 13 percent in 2001.

File this under random news of the day: in addition to his stints with Martha Stewart, Discovery, and the Fine Living Network, celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse is getting ready to open his own sports-themed restaurant.
Nation's Restaurant News reports that the sports restaurant, aptly named Lagasse's Stadium, will take over a space in Las Vegas resort The Palazzo. In addition to a lounge, the 24,000-square-foot spot will have stadium-style seating, luxury boxes for private events, and custom viewing walls with 100 HDTV screens.

While most of the nation is focused on the swiftly-moving H1N1 virus this Summer, the season is ripe for other viruses that thrive in warm weather and the activities people pursue throughout those months. Coxsackie virus, also known as hand-foot and mouth disease, is spread through direct contact with nose and throat discharges, as well as bowel movements from infected people. Tots tend to transfer the moderately contagious virus to each other in warm months due to their use of pools and outdoor play equipment.

While the concept of fathers staying home to care for their kids while mothers take on the role of primary breadwinner is not new, the trend is getting a lot more attention due to recession's impact of familes' employment status. Though some dads gripe about their lack of respect in the home, others are celebrating the newfound responsibilities.
In a recent New York Times, former print journalist Michael Winerip wrote about the joy he found in the day-to-day parenting activities he took over when his wife returned to work after 10 years.
