Pregnancy has its drawbacks, but one thing an expectant mama can get some relief from is her monthly period. A nine month (and often more) break from her monthly friend is a nice perk for most moms, but all good things must come to an end. Eventually, the cramps will return along with the tampons, pads, and PMS.

While I think tampons sell themselves thanks to their life-changing qualities, Tampax has recruited tennis great Serena Williams to pitch their lady products in a new commercial. Dressed in her tennis whites, Serena has nothing to fear from Mother Nature, because she's also wearing a tampon! Over the years, companies have appealed to femininity or used the rhetoric of freedom to sell tampons to women.

A friend noticed her cycle was off — having gone from 28 to 33 to 30 days in the last few months — so she consulted her doctor and was surprised by his response. The OB/GYN said he has seen more women with off-cycles over the past four months than he has ever seen in his 15 years of practicing. He attributes it to the stress women have due to the recent political climate, the current economic crisis, and the sense of concern they have for the country.

Often I feel we deserve medals for dealing with the cramps, crying spells, and other delights that accompany that time of the month. Some women even have to deal with heavy bleeding that lasts more than 10 days.
