Does anyone remember Helium? It was a very awesome Boston band in the late 90s — think Sleater-Kinney meets Bjork meets the Strokes — whose members included Ash Bowie of Polvo and a girl-crush-worthy lead singer named Mary Timony. Many of us who adored Helium, however, have been a little disappointed with Timony's solo output to date: Mountains was like a bad trip after a Renaissance faire, while The Golden Dove was an improvement but still a bit silly.

My guess is that the gift stores in baby hospitals aren't fully feeling pains of the recession. Balloons and flowers seem to be popping up all over my neighborhood as the storks keep dropping off bundles of joy. Passing through the decorated doors and helium inflated pacifiers is parenthood's equivalent of the newlywed tradition of the groom carrying the bride over the threshold.

The key to this soiree is simplicity so all you need to decorate the sibling shower digs is some helium balloons and a sharpie marker. Make baby face balloons by drawing fun lil expressions — sleeping babe, pacifier sucking tot and yawning youngster — what ever comes to mind, on balloons of your kiddo's favorite colors. If the guests are old enough, design a few and then let the tots go wild decorating their own with washable markers.

I look forward to Wondercon all year, mostly because it's in my hometown so I don't have to worry about flying, hotels, and cabs, but also because I get to check out tons of upcoming movies. Day two of Wondercon was packed (and I mean packed) with geeky and celebrity goodness. There's a lot to cover, but first up, is Up!

Tying a balloon onto your child's wrist at a birthday party hardly gives a parent reason to fret. But one geek dad decided it would be fun to figure out just how many He (Helium for us lay persons) filled balloons it would take to lift his child into flight. Basing his calculations, the daddy figured he needed 1,143 helium injected balloons to hoist a clothed 30 pound 2-year-old boy.
