This Thursday, friends and family will gather to socialize, give thanks, and stuff themselves silly. Whether you're hosting or putting in a guest appearance, there's always a lot of preparation and work that goes into every Thanksgiving gathering.
This year my husband and I are driving from Berkeley to Whidbey Island, off the coast of Washington, to stay with his family.

Summer's definitely the time to take weekend trips, or to host out-of-town weekend guests. So, I've been thinking a lot about how to be a good houseguest, as well as how to host my friends and family in a gracious manner in the upcoming weeks.
Luckily, almost all of the houseguests I've hosted have been perfect guests.

Since many of you attended, or threw election parties last year, I'm left assuming that you're doing the same for inauguration today. And in most groups of friends, it's usually one person who acts as the hostess with the mostess, so tell me ladies, are you typically the host or the guest?

You love your little brother, you really do, but his antics that were cute when he was 11 are less amusing at 20. Much to your surprise, Friday night when you’re about to go meet up with friends, he shows up at your door with his girlfriend and best friend and asks to crash at your house for the next few days as they pass through town.
You’re in a hurry to leave, so you begrudgingly tell them they can stay.

We all like to arrive fashionably late from time to time, but having guests who arrive unfashionably early can be a real inconvenience. If you often host parties or have friends over for dinner, however, you're bound to encounter some early arrivals.
The worst is when you haven't finished getting your house in order or you're still trying on clothes or fixing your hair.

It may seem a little ironic: first I told you not to show up early to an event and now I'm highlighting the importance of not showing up too late to a party.
This rule should be remembered and practiced for dinner parties especially. Your hostess has taken the time to create a meal and has specified it will begin at a certain time, so be there and ready to eat at that time.

It requires a lot of experience and some serious patience to become a graceful hostess. A good girlfriend of mine currently gives us all a run for our money, and I admire her talent and her skills. Let's review a few helpful tips for throwing a great dinner or cocktail party and enjoying it, too.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, my husband and I are staying at his mom's Whidbey Island retreat. Luckily, the house is big enough to allow us the luxury of staying in a guest bedroom. I've spent a good many nights sleeping on sofas, and I don't mind, but a guest bedroom is always a wonderful luxury!

Old-fashioned homemaking wisdom says that everyone should sleep in her own guest room at least once, to see how it feels and make improvements. (As the guest in many rooms over the years, I can safely say that most people do not do this.) Of course, if you live in a smallish apartment or house, you may not have a spare room, but that doesn't mean you should ignore your guests' needs, even if they're just crashing on the couch.
So I've put together a quick checklist that covers the basic essentials that any good guest room (or mere guest space) should have.
