High-value gifts are turned over to government archives when a president's term is up. Probably for the best, though! I don't know what he would do with a sapphire-and-diamond necklace, bracelet, earrings, and ring set, worth $85,000, in Midland, TX. I mean, Dallas maybe!

I'm saddened to announce that one of the precious pets of the current first family has passed away – this cute cat died Sunday at the Executive Mansion at the age of 18. The lil girl had many names; she was originally called "India" after the former Texas Ranger baseball player, Ruben Sierra (nicknamed "El Indio"), before the then 9-year-old Barbara Bush renamed her "Willie" when she joined their family. When the twins went off to college in 2000, they left their cat at home in the White House with President and Mrs. Bush where she's lived ever since. Guess they're also fans of multiple pet names for precious pals, as this pet was also commonly called "Kitty" by the first family!

Beyonce, Morgan and Barbra Join Bushes at the White House

George and Laura Bush were gracious hosts one more time in their home stretch at the White House last night for the annual Kennedy Center Honors gala. Barbra Streisand, who played nice and even hugged G. W. Bush at the event despite her personal feelings towards the outbound president, Morgan Freeman and Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of The Who were among the honorees. They were joined by political heavyweights Condoleezza Rice, Dick Cheney, the Bush family and more. Beyonce lit up the red carpet in her gown before taking the stage to sing "The Way We Were" while Jack Black managed to make the formal red carpet a little more fun. Congrats to all the honorees - the event airs on CBS December 30.

President Bush Buys a Post-White House House

As President-elect Barack Obama prepares to move into the White House, President Bush has picked up some new property for his life post-1600 Penn, when he leaves office in January. George and Laura have ponied up for a 8,501-square-foot, four-bedroom, ranch-style home in Preston Hollow, a wealthy North Dallas neighborhood where they lived before he became governor of Texas in 1995. I guess George is saying goodbye to the Georgian style.Preston Hollow counts some other prominent residents, including Dallas mayor Tom Leppert, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, former Dallas Cowboys Roger Staubach and Chuck Howley, and billionaire investors Harold Simmons and T. Boone Pickens, among others, so the Bush family should feel right at home, and perhaps their new neighbors won't be starstruck. The word on the sale price is that the property sold for "considerably more" than its $2.1 million appraisal price. While supporters of No Child Left Behind argue it holds educators accountable, the amount of work required to prepare, test, and produce post-test reports has created a thriving industry. Who is profiting most? To find out, read more.

Textbook publishers moonlighting for the government
NCLB requires states to turn in lengthy and involved reports, which are provided by three of the top five educational publishers, which all rose to dominance under Bush. The companies are affectionately known as "Bush stocks."

Test-preparation companies
Under NCLB law, public schools must set aside 20 percent of federal funding to pay for supplemental educational services. And with 1,800 educational companies in the country, that money can choose where it wants to be spent. It might like Ignite! Learning, an educational company headed by George Bush's brother, Neil Bush, which has carved a niche by creating products that complement NCLB.

Lobbyists
Specifically Sandy Kress, former president of the Dallas School Board, who crafted NCLB in Texas when Bush was governor. The lawmaker turned lobbyist earned $4 million in lobbying contracts with educational companies.

Stone Finds His Cheney in Richard Dreyfuss

Come this Fall, the current administration will be movin' out of the spotlight just as Oliver Stone's movie about it is heading to theaters. As reported earlier this month, W. will be released October 17, 2008 so it's no wonder the casting news continues to break at a rapid pace. They've got George and Laura, and even found their British Prime minister and National Security Advisor-turned-Secretary of State but one of the most buzzed-about casting slots left to fill was that of Vice President Cheney. Now there's news that Richard Dreyfuss will likely fill those shoes.

The Hollywood Reporter notes similar public service roles Dreyfuss has taken on in his career thus far:

The 60-year-old Dreyfuss has never played a U.S. leader, but has had a few related roles. He starred as an opposition senator to Michael Douglas' commander in chief in 1995's The American President, as Alexander Haig in a television movie about Ronald Reagan and played the president of a banana republic in the 1980s comedy Moon Over Parador.

Usually Dreyfuss' name makes me think of Mr. Holland's Opus and What About Bob. Still, I think the acting veteran will have no problem pulling off this, ah, controversial White House guy. Rob Corddry is also signed on to play the president's former Press Secretary Ari Fleischer and Toby Jones will step in as Karl Rove. I believe that just leaves Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld open. Got ideas?
