While the stock market's belly-dancer-gyrations (more of a limbo, "how low can you go?", really) seem significant — according to a study commissioned by the EU, the global economy actually loses more money through the disappearance of forests than through the financial ho-down. The study pegs the cost of the loss of forests between $2 and $5 trillion per year, while calculations put the financial mess at $1.5 trillion.
How did they arrive at that figure?

Partially hydrogenated oil is a type of trans fat that has gotten a lot of flak, and rightfully so. If I were carrying a baby Bella inside me, I'd like to think that I'd have some pressing issues on my mind: Lamaze classes, proper nutrition, getting the nursery ready, that sort of thing. Pubic grooming doesn't make the list. (It's not like I'd be able to see anything below my bump, anyway.) But if you want to test your pain threshold before the birth, you could always go in for a bikini wax.

As close readers know, my waxer keeps raising prices, and I've been looking for a new place for deforestation. A new waxing salon called Stript recently opened, and although its prices are too high for me, I'm intrigued by a service it provides. Along with regular waxing services, Stript offers Epilar, an add-on service that promises to permanently reduce hair regrowth.

After last month's attempt at a DIY bikini wax resulted in spectacular disaster — we're still discovering particles of sticky wax on the bathroom floor — I have decided to splurge on a professional deforestation this month. Very exciting stuff, folks. If you're thinking of ripping out some of your hair, look no further.

There's a new iPhone app that I'm already in love with because it not only spruces up your iPhone, but your money for the app supports a great cause! When you purchase the app A Real Tree for 99 cents, an actual tree will get planted in countries like Panama, Belize, and Haiti, to fight deforestation.
A Real Tree works with other organizations to help educate local communities and provide them with tools to enrich their land and lives.

- Kofi Annan is in Kenya today, mediating talks between Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader, Raila Odinga. Mr. Annan's presence has already halted one planned protest. The face-to-face talks are hoped to calm the violent clashes between the two parties that have raged since a contested election last month.

Looks like we've been putting our purchases of "fresh air" and "clean water" on our credit cards lately, and a nasty bill just arrived. The WWF just released a Living Planet report showing that humans are using 30 percent more resources than the planet can sustain and replenish every year.
The interest rate on living beyond our ecological means is huge.
