In the classic musical Annie there's a great line imitating Miss Hannigan during the "Hard-Knock Life" number that I always think of when I'm mopping the house:"You'll stay up until this floor shines like the top of the Chrysler Building." The image of how that landmark sparkles in the skyline is actually a great motivator for me. But, sadly, the plot, which involves the hard labor of orphans, isn't the nicest thing.

It's the big companies like Starbucks and Chrysler that make news with their financial troubles, but the 3/50 Project wants us to remember the independent businesses that are struggling without the headlines. The mission is to get you to spend locally and the project's website uses some simple numbers that make it compelling to opt for local shopping.
Here's where the project's numerical namesake comes into play.

I'm all about the electric vehicle, so naturally the Peapod Mobility electric car caught my eye. More like a neighborhood people mover than a take-to-the-road-with-the-wind-in-your-hair type of ride, this car's purpose is well served. Perfect for trips to the grocery store, dropping the kiddies off at school, heading to the library, and finding a parking spot downtown.

Big named businesses began declaring bankruptcy in 2008, and we'd be foolishly optimistic to think the buck stopped in the new year. While it may not make sense to pay any attention to predictions, it's always good to stay in tune with what's happening in our economy and the types of companies on this list say a lot about the bigger picture. Using data from sources such as Moody's Investors Service, US News compiled a list of 15 companies it believes will look much different by the end of 2009.

Copper verdigris is beautiful on rooftops, but the corroded metal doesn't look so good on your pots and pans. So it's important to keep them polished and in shipshape. As it turns out, it's not so difficult to do so.

One should expect a crystal chandelier like this Neiman Marcus Sterling Chandelier ($1255) to shine like the top of the Chrysler building after you've purchased it, but even beauty queens need a good rinse every once in a while. Since you've invested so much in it, it's important to care for your crystal chandelier in the correct way. Think of it like child-rearing!
