An interesting New York Times article over the weekend tries to figure out why recent box office returns are showing that more women have been going to see horror films than men.
Film professor Carol Clover had one interesting theory why women like horror films in her book Men, Women and Chainsaws. In many slasher films, she argues, including Halloween and Friday the 13th, there may be many female victims, but there's always one girl left standing (the "final girl") who gets to off the villain in the end.

Artist Christopher Chiappa's Chainsaw Rocker is a to-scale reproduction of a junkyard-find Honda Accord car seat that was chiseled to form by a chainsaw sculptor. Currently on view at Moss in Los Angeles, it's lowbrow artwork for the design elite. While its brass plated legs make it a delightfully functioning rocker, it's the chair's texture that really gets me.

Well folks, we've come a long way, but the 64 scary movies we started with have now been narrowed down to two. So now it's time to make one last decision: which one deserves the crown?

I haven't been wowed by the promos for The Stepfather, but it does have Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley in it, so maybe I can be persuaded to go see it on Friday.
Based on the 1987 original, the film follows Michael (Badgley), a son who returns home from military school to meet his mom's new boyfriend, David (Nip/Tuck's Dylan Walsh). But once a neighbor suggests that his stepfather looks like a suspect on America's Most Wanted, Michael gets suspicious that the guy is not as nice as he seems [cue creepy music].
