In an attempt to cut costs and be more eco-chic, many college campuses have gotten rid of cafeteria trays. Instead, students are being forced to carry their meals on plates. The trayless cafeterias are seeing up to a 30 percent decrease in food waste, and with no trays to wash, the use of energy and water is reduced as well.

We already heard about gas prices affecting the quality of schools and it was only a matter of time before the other bane of our existence, sky-rocketing food prices, started to affect schools as well. The cost of staples like milk, eggs, and flour has risen so much that school cafeterias are struggling to maintain both nutritious meals and full staffs. Because schools have to meet weekly requirements for protein, starch, calories and specific food groups in order to qualify for federal reimbursement, more likely than not personnel will be scaled back to accommodate rising prices.

Now that your lil one has a lunch box that helps reduce waste throughout the year, fill it with food that he will want to gobble down, rather than toss. Posting calorie counts has been nothing if not controversial. In NYC the restaurants complained, and now on college campuses students are questioning the practice. In attempts to fight the freshman 15, dining halls have begun posting calorie counts, but there have been some negative consequences.
