Her florist has stopped providing her with her favored lismachia, Queen Anne's lace, and thistles flower arrangement. Even her two sons have taken to referring to her as Ruth rather than as Mom.

Yesterday news broke that Bernie Madoff will plead guilty to massive fraud, a plea that will most likely result in a life sentence and $177 billion in criminal forfeitures (good luck!). The federal prosecutor told the judge that there is no plea agreement with Madoff.
In addition to guaranteed jail time, a speedy plea could also prevent a full investigation that would come from a long trial.

When news broke last week that Wall Street investment wiz Bernard Madoff allegedly admitted to a $50 billion Ponzi scheme, it left me wondering how he managed to do this without alerting regulators.
This week, we found out that there were classic warning signs that the SEC admitted it should have acted upon. Well now, Nobel Laureate economist Paul Krugman says that Madoff's fraud is evidence of a systemic defect in our financial system — vast riches for those who managed other people's money has had a corrupting effect on American society.
