Dolly Parton Wanted to Be a Piglet!

Well, this was the highlight of my weekend: official GiggleSugar girl crush Dolly Parton strutted her stuff on 60 Minutes last night and told a story about how as a little girl, she wanted to be a piglet so bad, she tried suckling a mama pig. Somehow, it's cute when she says it. Don't worry, Dolly: you're not the only one!

Should the President Be Allowed to Laugh?

It seems like a silly question, but last night on 60 Minutes, Steve Kroft pressed President Obama for letting loose a few chuckles during his interview.

The exchange went like this:

Kroft: Are people going to look at this and say, "I mean, he's sitting there just making jokes about money" - How do you deal with- I mean: explain . . . Are you punch-drunk?

Obama: No, no. There's gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day.

The chuckles are being heard around the world today, as pundits ponder whether it's appropriate for the President to laugh while discussing serious topics.

The Obamas Visited 60 Minutes Last Night - Did You Watch?

President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle addressed the economic crisis, transition, national security, his cabinet, and even the presidential pooch in their first post-election interview with Steve Kroft from 60 Minutes last night. When asked about Hillary Clinton, who is rumored to be his Secretary of State pick, Obama said, "She is somebody who I needed advice and counsel from. She is one of the most thoughtful public officials that we have. Beyond that, you're not getting anything out of me," but that announcements are coming "soon."

Here are highlights from the interview:

60 Minutes: How's your life changed in the last ten days?
Barack Obama: Well, I tell you what, there seem to be more people hovering around me. That's for sure. And, on the other hand, I'm sleeping in my own bed over the last ten days, which is quite a treat. Michelle always wakes up earlier than I do. So listen to her roaming around and having the girls come in and, you know, jump in your bed. It's a great feeling. Yeah.
60 Minutes: Has this been easier than the campaign trail?
Barack Obama: Well, it's different. I think that during the campaign it is just a constant frenetic, forward momentum. Here, I'm stationary. But the issues come to you. And we've got a lot of work to do. We've got a lot of problems, a lot of big challenges.
60 Minutes: Have there been moments when you've said, 'What did I get myself into?'
Barack Obama: Surprisingly enough, I feel right now that I'm doing what I should be doing. That gives me a certain sense of calm. I will say that the challenges that we're confronting are enormous. And they're multiple. And so there are times during the course of a given a day where you think, 'Where do I start?'

60 Minutes: What have you been concentrating on this week?
Barack Obama: Couple of things. Number one, I think it's important to get a national security team in place because transition periods are potentially times of vulnerability to a terrorist attack. We wanna make sure that there is as seamless a transition on national security as possible. Obviously the economy. Talking to top economic advisers about how we're gonna create jobs, how we get the economy back on track and what do we do in terms of some long-term issues like energy and health care. And how do we sequence those things in a way that we can actually get things through Congress?

Barack Obama will give his first post-election interview with Steve Kroft from 60 Minutes tonight alongside soon-to-be first lady Michelle Obama.

The interview will broadcast tonight at 7 p.m. EST/PST.

Obama and John McCain both appeared on 60 Minutes in separate interviews for a special one-hour broadcast during the campaign.

If the Intro of 60 Minutes Took Steroids and Had Ron Burgundy

I don't think there are many folks for whom that 60 Minutes ticking clock opener doesn't prompt childhood flashbacks of a Sunday night dread of homework, baths, and bedtime. This is decidedly more fun: It takes the famous intro, the "I'm Morely Safer" part, and, well, imagines what would happen if Rambo and friends showed up to contribute.

I can't stop watching it over and over. Especially the Fight Club one. Ha! This 60 Minutes fun is second only to the "Andy Rooney Game," invented by comedian Joe Mande, where you erase all but the first and last sentence of Andy Rooney's weekly rant, leaving a little gem that's kind of surprisingly funny. Though I may be the only one on the planet under 75 who really enjoys Mr. Rooney, I do have a bit of an old fogey affinity.

Oregon's Health Care Lottery and Desperation for Doctors

This week Oregon is holding a lottery for the remaining 3,000 slots in their state health care system. That's right: a lottery. While the health care story dominating the headlines recently is the Hillary/Barack mandate debate, far more shocking stories just like this are plaguing the U.S. medical scene. The diagnosis is grim.

In Oregon, more than 80,000 people have signed up for the chance to win access to a health insurance plan designed for those who don't qualify for Medicaid, but are too poor to buy their own coverage. The Oregon Department of Human Services estimates that 600,000 Oregonians are currently without insurance.

But wait. There's more. The buried story on 60 Minutes (behind the flashier Clinton/Obama frenzy) was about a group called Remote Area Medical (RAM). The group was designed to parachute triage care into remote areas like the Amazon. Now, they're doing almost 60 percent of their work within the United States. In one mission - to Knoxville - the group saw 920 patients and had to turn 400 away.

With news like this, one wonders if any health care solution can possibly be a salve at this point. Debating the finer points of a mandate seems futile. Is the real problem not with price of health care, but the insurance system itself? What if instead of trying to buy people insurance we concentrated on making trips to the doctor affordable? And does holding a lottery for a life-saving service seem below an allegedly civilized society?

Andy Rooney's Take on Westminster

Andy Rooney is usually too grumpy for my taste, but I got a kick out of his report on the 132nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which aired as part of last night's 60 Minutes. Apparently Rooney attends the event every year and claims he's "never met a bad dog at the show," even though he can't always identify the breeds. I couldn't help but giggle at the visual of him checking out the cute doggies. Or maybe it was just the juxtaposition of a grumpy old man next to pretty pups. Either way, watch the video for a sneak peek at some of the dogs that didn't make it into the winning rounds. What do you think of dog show handlers?

Dear Fit,
I'm trying to lose weight, so cardio has become a part of my weekly routine. When it was cooler out, I had no problem jogging 30 minutes, about four times a week. I live where the temps are in the 80s and 90s right now with a considerable amount of humidity, and it's been brutal jogging. I've been walking instead for an hour. Am I burning the same amount of calories, or should I stick it out and keep jogging?

Mom-Me Time: Pick Up a Copy of The Help

If mama's got a few minutes to herself and is looking for something that will take her mind to another world, she needs not look further than this gold and purple hardback book. The Help ($12) is a quick read that will steal her attention and her affection and leave her wanting more. Kathryn Stockett's first novel, the book about the relationships between mothers and the women that help them (nannies in particular) will have mommy laughing out loud, tearing up in the eyes, dog-earring pages with special passages and thinking about how she relates to some of the closest people in her life.

Just pages into the lengthy text and I was hooked. Unlike any book I've read in recent times, the characters in these pages immediately come to life and fully color the imagination. You can picture their hair, dream up their clothes and hear their voices like they're sitting on the bus right next to you. While they may be fictional muses, I wish I could meet them, thank them, reprimand them and have a tall glass of sweetened iced tea with them. Though the book is set back in the early '60s, some of the conversations and lessons are timeless. For the rest of my review, read more.

Centered around the lives of three caretakers, the hired "help" who tend to high society's children may occasionally be called "mama" as they often forge a closer bond with the child than his own mother. And while some women may have their best friends to rely on, the housekeeper frequently knows and cares more than her "best" friends -the phrase "dirty laundry" having a double meaning when it comes to life behind closed doors. In the end, it is a story about women taking extraordinary measures to right some wrongs, even if it means risking it all. Of all the lessons to be learned from this rich novel, the golden rule speaks loudest - "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Maybe that's why she wrapped it in a glowing cover.

Before this goes to the theaters, which it surely will, buy it, read it and gift it to everyone you know. It will not disappoint.
