YANGON, Myanmar - Almost 4,000 people were killed and nearly 3,000 others are unaccounted for after a devastating cyclone in Myanmar, a state radio station said Monday.
Foreign Minister Nyan Win told foreign diplomats at a briefing that the death toll could reach 10,000, according to diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was held behind closed doors.
Tropical Cyclone Nargis hit the Southeast Asian country, also known as Burma, early Saturday with winds of up to 120 mph, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

Not On Our Watch, a non-profit founded in part by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Don Cheadle, has reportedly given a half a million dollars to Save the Children for emergency relief work in Myanmar (Burma).
“Cyclone Nargis has left an estimated 100,000 Burmese dead and one million without shelter. While the international community has offered limited aid, Not On Our Watch remains committed to donating funds toward lifesaving programs in Burma and advocating for an end to the military regime’s gross violations of human rights.”
MTV News reports that Not On Our Watch has given $250,000 to Save the Children up front, and will match every additional dollar given to the aid group up to $250,000.

I will admit my prior ignorance, here and now for all to see, on Burma/Myanmar. When the cyclone ravished the impoverished coastline of Myanmar back in May of this year, I knew very little about Burma/Myanmar/and the whole situation surrounding the political climate.
The New Yorker did a fabulously in depth article on the country in August, and after reading the piece (which the online version is 13 pages long, but well worth the read) I came to a fuller understanding of the history, the struggles and the fight for democracy.

I am confused. What is Obama doing about this? I mean besides "diplomatic discussion" of course.

((There are news stories, but jezebel summed it up nicely...))
Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was charged today with violating the terms of her house arrest after an American man snuck into her house uninvited.
Suu Kyi is the daughter of Aung San, a revolutionary who helped Burma win its independence from Britain ("Burma" is the name used by opposition groups to refer to the country now officially known as Myanmar). She has spent 13 of the last 19 years in some form of custody, due to her pro-democracy activism and helped found the National League for Democracy, which won in a landslide in Burma's 1990 general election (the ruling military junta nullified the results).

The Apologists

For 50 minutes, Obama sat mute, as a Marxist thug from Nicaragua delivered his diatribe, charging America with a century of terrorist aggression in Central America.
After Daniel Ortega finished spitting in our face, accusing us of inhumanity toward Fidel Castro’s Cuba, Obama was asked his thoughts.

"HOW TO STOP THE DRUG WARS
Mar 5th 2009
From The Economist print edition
Prohibition has failed; legalisation is the least bad solution.
A HUNDRED years ago a group of foreign diplomats gathered in Shanghai for the first-ever international effort to ban trade in a narcotic drug. On February 26th 1909 they agreed to set up the International Opium Commission—just a few decades after Britain had fought a war with China to assert its right to peddle the stuff.

They're known for their love of pranks and practical jokes, but good friends Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon have come together for something far more serious.
The Ocean's 11 stars – all past or present winners of PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive title – helped launch an advertising campaign aimed at getting more aid into Myanmar, whose ruling regime has made access to the country difficult for aid agencies and relief workers in the wake of last month's cyclone Nargis.
The ad campaign is sponsored by the activist group Not On Our Watch, headed up by Pitt, Clooney, Damon and other Hollywood heavy-hitters.
