The FDR "Solution"
by Tibor R. Machan
http://rebirthofreason.com/Articles/Machan/The_FDR_Solution.shtml
It is a very scary prospect but if president-elect Barack Obama is serious about admiring President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for how the latter dealt with America’s Great Depression, then America and the world may be in for some very ugly times indeed. This is because by the most reliable historical accounts, FDR managed to overcome the economic crisis of his day not by his Keynesian political economic policies (of governmentspending and extensive government funded public works).

I was watching The Perilous Fight on PBS, a documentary made of all the films in color shot by soldiers, journalists, civilians, etc. during World War II, many of which hadn't been shown before. And that contains all kinds of miscellaneous information from the perspective of all these different sources.

Twenty Years After the Fall
By George Friedman
We are now at the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the beginning of the collapse of the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. We are also nearing the 18th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union itself. This is more than simply a moment for reflection — it is a moment to consider the current state of the region and of Russia versus that whose passing we are now commemorating.

The Absolutely Worst Bill Ever
By Peter Ferrara on 11.11.09 @ 6:08AM
"The Worst Bill Ever." That is the title the always calm and rational Wall Street Journal put on its editorial on November 1 about the government health care takeover bill that passed the House last week on virtually a party line vote, 220-215. But even this label doesn't fully communicate the outright assault on the American people involved in this legislation.

I thought this would be an interesting tie in from Tulipe's earlier post.
On the night of Nov. 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall — the stark, menacing symbol of the Cold War — came crashing down, suddenly and dramatically.

“It is exciting when you are young, to travel for days on horseback and sleep under the stars,” he told Arthas. “When you are my age, though, horseback riding is best left for recreation, and the stars one can glimpse by looking out the window are quite close enough.”Arthas had grinned, diving with pleasure into the new responsibilities. Admiral Proudmoore and Archmage Antonidas had apparently come to the same conclusions.

Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley (with Ron Powers)
James Bradley is the son of John Bradley, one of the men raising the flag in what he calls "The Photograph" -- this famous image, taken by Joe Rosenthal, of six men raising an American flag at the summit of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima.
This book is the story of Bradley and the five other men in The Photograph -- how they came to be in it and what happened to them afterwards.
Bradley's honest, blunt style of writing is great; he doesn't sugar-coat the story or dramatize it; he gives the simple facts.
