Saying there are a million ways to connect with people online isn't much of an overstatement. The trouble is, all that online communication and connection alters in-person interactions. People now use Facebook to get to know one another and, for better or for worse, judge one another on their online activity, friends, and reputation.

Have you heard a story like this? A good friend of mine met a great guy in a crowded bar, and barely had the chance to talk to him before the people she came with wanted to leave. As they parted ways and he hurriedly asked her, "Can I call you sometime?"

Twitter switch for Guardian, after 188 years of ink
• Newspaper to be available only on messaging service
• Experts say any story can be told in 140 characters
Rio Palof
The Guardian, Wednesday 1 April 2009
Consolidating its position at the cutting edge of new media technology, the Guardian today announces that it will become the first newspaper in the world to be published exclusively via Twitter, the sensationally popular social networking service that has transformed online communication.
The move, described as "epochal" by media commentators, will see all Guardian content tailored to fit the format of Twitter's brief text messages, known as "tweets", which are limited to 140 characters each. Boosted by the involvement of celebrity "twitterers", such as Madonna, Britney Spears and Stephen Fry, Twitter's profile has surged in recent months, attracting more than 5m users who send, read and reply to tweets via the web or their mobile phones.

Clive Thompson on How Twitter Creates a Social Sixth Sense
Twitter is the app that everyone loves to hate. Odds are you've noticed people — probably much younger than you — manically using Twitter, a tool that lets you post brief updates about your everyday thoughts and activities to the Web via browser, cell phone, or IM. The messages are limited to 140 characters, so they lean toward pithy, haiku-like utterances.

At first I didn't give much credence to the whole Twitter experience. It seemed to me nothing more than a Facebook status...which I could do from Facebook without having to go through all the sign-up stuff again. I still don't use it, but after the last 2-3 weeks, events like the 20th anniversary of Tiananmen Square and Iran's elections have caused me to reconsider.

HONG KONG — A prominent student leader from the 1989 pro-democracy protests at Beijing's Tiananmen Square says he's arrived in the Chinese gambling enclave of Macau to turn himself in.
Wu'er Kaixi told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday that immigration officials at Macau's airport took him to a room after he arrived from Taipei. He was not immediately told if he will be allowed to enter the territory.
