WASHINGTON (AFP) – The commander of Fort Campbell army base in Kentucky has ordered a three-day suspension of regular duties to focus on a spike in suicides among his troops amid concern over a wider trend across the armed services.
The "stand-down" on Friday entered its third day at Fort Campbell, which is home to the famed 101st Airborne Division and has recorded the highest rate of suicide in the army, with at least 11 confirmed or suspected suicides.
Brigadier General Stephen Townsend announced the stand-down to focus attention on the problem after two more soldiers took their lives last week.

Multiple sclerosis sufferer Debbie Purdy has won a landmark court battle that campaigners fear could lead to more people ending their lives in foreign "suicide clinics".

BERLIN (Jan. 6) - His spirit broken by financial fears, German billionaire Adolf Merckle took his own life this week -- becoming the latest high-profile casualty of a global economic crisis that already has claimed the lives of executives in Europe and the U.S.
Merckle, a respected businessmen with a wife and four children, jumped in front of a train in the town of Blaubeuren in southwestern Germany, officials said Tuesday.

LONDON (AP) — British maestro Edward Downes, who conducted the BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Opera but struggled in recent years as his hearing and sight failed, has died with his wife at an assisted suicide clinic in Switzerland. He was 85 and she was 74.
The couple's children said Tuesday that the couple died "peacefully and under circumstances of their own choosing" on Friday at a Zurich clinic run by the group Dignitas.

Three different students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls attempted suicide in the past year, according to the National Enquirer’s review of local reports. In each case the attempts were thankfully unsuccessful, and details were kept private out of consideration for the girls and their families. One girl was recently expelled when her behavior and a suicide attempt made it apparent that she was mentally ill
One student recently became suicidal after showing signs of mental illness and becoming disruptive in the classroom.

Right after Courtney Love said that someone stole her late husband Kurt Cobain’s ashes, leaving her “suicidal,” police were called to her home to intervene in a reported suicide attempt. Courtney was sleeping at the time and someone pranked her by calling the cops and claiming she was suicidal. Cops had a “5150″ order with them, which gives them the authority to take someone to a psychiatric facility, but Courtney somehow convinced them in her slurry stream of consciousness way that she was completely surprised to see them and was sober and sleeping before they came.

MIAMI – A college student committed suicide by taking a drug overdose in front of a live webcam as some computer users egged him on, others tried to talk him out of it, and another messaged OMG in horror when it became clear it was no joke.
