President Obama toured the historic Forbidden City in Beijing on Tuesday during a break from meetings with Chinese leaders.

BEIJING — In six hours of meetings, at two dinners and during a stilted 30-minute news conference in which President Hu Jintao did not allow questions, President Obama was confronted, on his first visit, with a fast-rising China more willing to say no to the United States.

The Five Afghan War Excuses [Rich Lowry] (NRO)
The administration's excuses for backing off the Afghan war are coming into clearer focus. Of course, "excuses" is a stilted word—for those who are, in terms of the administration's internal fight, in the Biden camp, they are "reasons." In any case, today's latest leak in the Washington Post, pretty clearly from Biden's side ("Vice President Biden offered some of the more pointed challenges to McChrsytal"), adds more to our understanding to the administration's justifications/thinking.

Brandon Flowers sits bolt upright in his train seat. So handsome you feel like putting a paper bag over your head the minute you meet him, his teeth a gleaming testament to the might of American dentistry, he is nevertheless not merely visibly uncomfortable but audibly uncomfortable, too.

Beating out Jenah, the only contestant never described as bubbly, and Chantal, a down-home native of Texas, the L.A. resident walked off with a contract with Elite Model Management, a cover and six-page spread in Seventeen magazine and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl.

Are we excited? I am, because with the exception on Nip/Tuck I have been relegated to watching Family Guy marathons, because I have absolutely no tv to watch. I guess Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice count as well, but they’ve been sucking lately so I tend to forget about them.

Hoover-era ghost stories no longer apply
By Jonah Goldberg
A very old story is once again being retold, with a few of the characters' names updated to besmirch the innocent. In this story, conservatives are to blame for an economic crisis because they allegedly believe there is no role for government in the economy, and all economic crises are due to lax regulation of markets.
Cokie Roberts recently gave a sense of how old this story is on ABC's "This Week."

Newlyweds Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were among the high-profile guests at Ellen DeGeneres's 50th birthday bash in Southern California over the weekend.

For performance artists, the stage is what sets the soul on fire. And for singers, especially, the stage is where legends are born and amateurs are put to shame. Without doubt, a poor live performance can quickly bring a singer’s career down in flames.

Brad Pitt unveiled his ambitious new residential vision for the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Ninth Ward of New Orleans on Monday's Today show. With a goal to have the project completed by the end of next summer, he calls it "Make It Right."
"I'm hoping we can start here and expand all over New Orleans," the star, 43, told Ann Curry as the two walked among pink tents ("an art installation, a social statement," he called them, admitting he'd like to see how it looks on Google Earth) erected to mark where on the site the future homes are to be built.
