On this day in 1994, Rwandan armed forces kill 10 Belgian peacekeeping officers in a successful effort to discourage international intervention in the genocide that had begun only hours earlier. In approximately three months, the Hutu extremists who controlled Rwanda brutally murdered an estimated 500,000 to 1 million innocent civilian Tutsis and moderate Hutus in the worst episode of ethnic genocide since World War II.
The immediate roots of the 1994 genocide dated back to the early 1990s, when President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, began using anti-Tutsi rhetoric to consolidate his power among the Hutus.

It cannot be said often enough that the chief of staff of the United States Army, Gen. George Casey, responded to a massacre of 13 Americans in which the suspect is a Muslim by saying: "Our diversity ... is a strength."

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - She can get out of jail, but Paris Hilton is having a harder time getting to Rwanda.
The charitable organization sponsoring Hilton's planned trip to the African nation, part of her aim to swap partying for philanthropy, said on Thursday it was postponing the journey.
The Spanish-based group, Playing for Good, said it was canceling the trip due to a "restructuring" in its organization.

Disaster in the making
By Thomas Sowell
After many a disappointment with someone, and especially after a disaster, we may be able to look back at numerous clues that should have warned us that the person we trusted did not deserve our trust.
When that person is the President of the United States, the potential for disaster is virtually unlimited.
Many people are rightly worried about what this administration's reckless spending will do to the economy in our time and to our children and grandchildren, to whom a staggering national debt will be passed on.

Could Food Shortages Bring Down Civilization or Perhaps a Summary of Humanity?
We owe some gratitude to Lester Brown for cleverly tackling such an important issue as food shortage and creating an awareness of this very real threat for our entire planet.

By ROB GILLIES, Associated Press Writer Rob Gillies, Associated Press Writer – 2 hrs 14 mins ago
TORONTO – Former President George W. Bush called former President Bill Clinton "his brother" and the two rarely disagreed in their first-ever appearance together on stage. The Republican and Democratic ex-presidents defended each other at a Toronto forum on Friday, disappointing some in the crowd of 6,000 who expected a more heated debate.
