The worst of the recession likely has passed in most of the U.S., but Florida is on a more difficult road to recovery, according to a new report from Wachovia Economics Group.
Florida went into the recession nine months ahead of the rest of the U.S., and excesses in housing and commercial real estate are considerably worse than the nation as a whole, the report says. Statewide, the median sales price of existing homes is down about 45 percent from the peak of the housing boom in November 2005.

Americans are paring down the list of familiar household appliances they say they can't live without, according to a new national survey by the Pew Research Center's Social & Demographic Trends project.
Microwaves, televisions and even home air conditioning don’t seem as necessary as they once did. In fact, we’re beginning to see them as luxuries
In the past decade, the public's luxury-versus-necessity perceptual boundaries had been moving in the other direction - the share of adults who considered a microwave a necessity was just 32% in 1996.

Even in boom times, young people who become too old for the foster-care system often struggle to make it on their own, lacking families, job skills or adequate educations. Now, the recession has made the challenges of life after foster care even more formidable, especially for those seeking federal housing vouchers, which are contingent on having an income.
Michael Smith will turn 21 in August, and his foster care benefits will expire.

Doctors at the University of Minnesota say they've found a promising treatment for a dreadful genetic skin disease that affects children and has always been fatal up to now.
The treatment - a transplant of stem cells obtained from his brother's bone marrow - has given new hope for Nate Liao, a 25-month-old from Clarksburg, N.J., and potentially other patients suffering from the same and similar diseases, the doctors said. Those young patients include another one of Nate's brothers.
