Sometimes comments we overhear can expose us to a view of the world or people that feels very troubling. For me, trying to understand what might be driving those troubling views offers some help, makes me feel less helpful.
Recently I overheard some comments on race that left me feeling queasy - and I think other people have as well.

In Washington, the clearer a statement is, the more certain it is to be followed by a "clarification" when people realize what was said.
The clearly racist comments made by Judge Sonia Sotomayor on the Berkeley campus in 2001 have forced the spinmasters to resort to their last-ditch excuse, that it was "taken out of context."
If that line is used during Judge Sotomayor's Senate confirmation hearings, someone should ask her to explain just what those words mean when taken in context.

We're playing those mind games together
Pushing the barriers,
Planting seeds
Playing the mind guerrilla
Chanting the mantra, peace on earth

It's a chilling moment when the light goes out in someone's eyes. A once-radiant child hardens from abuse. A woman's heart shrinks after her husband's abandonment.

Six college students from St. Louis accuse a popular Chicago nightclub of using a dress code banning baggy pants to racially profile them, denying them entrance to the club on a recent Saturday night.
The African-American students were part of a group of nearly 200 students from Washington University who were in Chicago on a fall break senior class trip the weekend of Oct.

(CNN) -- A suburban Philadelphia swim club has invited children from a largely minority day-care center to come back after a June reversal that fueled allegations of racism against the club, a spokeswoman said Sunday.
The development came during a hastily called Sunday afternoon meeting of the Valley Club in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania.

If I attend a black Church and tithe once a week, does that make me a racist? How about if I donate my time to an organization committed to ensuring young black men avoid prison; would that make me a racist? Probably not.

‘Out of Context’: Part II
By Thomas Sowell
As the mainstream media circles the wagons around Judge Sonia Sotomayor, to protect her from the consequences of her own words and deeds, its main arguments are distractions from the issue at hand. A CNN reporter, for example, got all worked up because Rush Limbaugh had used the word "racist" to describe the judge's words.
Since it has been repeated like a mantra that Judge Sotomayor's words have been "taken out of context," let us look at Rush Limbaugh in context.

((Sorry this is so long, and the language is rough...))
On a muggy Florida evening in 2008, I meet Iraq War veteran Forrest Fogarty in the Winghouse, a little bar-restaurant on the outskirts of Tampa, his favorite hangout. He told me on the phone I would recognize him by his skinhead. Sure enough, when I spot a white guy at a table by the door with a shaved head, white tank top and bulging muscles, I know it can only be him.

Ok.... so another day, and another stereotype that I have to deal with. My cousin and her new bf was over at my house a little while ago and he saw pictures of me and fiance and also my dad and made this comment that just really set me off, because he essentially insulted my fiance and my dad.

When are people going to tell talk radio hosts to shut up ?
Yesterday on his radio show, conservative host G. Gordon Liddy continued the right wing’s all-out assault on Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
