If the Pittsburgh Penguins don’t realize the enviable position they’re in, the large NHL standings board in the middle of their dressing room should tell them.
Only two Eastern Conference teams are listed, with the conference finals results in bright red numbers: Penguins 3, Flyers 1.
For the Penguins, it’s one victory to go to play for the Stanley Cup, a large picture of which also is displayed in their locker room.

"Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero announced Saturday that the Pittsburgh Penguins have traded the rights to pending unrestricted free agent forwards Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Dallas’ fourth round pick, previously obtained by Tampa Bay, in the 2009 Entry Draft. In the event Tampa Bay signs Malone to a contract for the 2008-09 season, the pick will become Tampa Bay’s third round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft.

Hello Sugar hockey girls! Since I'm watching the game from home today, I thought I'd try out some (completely Penguins-biased) live updates of the game in progress. If you're watching, feel free to read along and jump in.

...they decide to play a very defensive-minded defenseman at left wing. The Pittsburgh Penguins apparently will play Brooks Orpik at left wing tonight.
Now Brooks, who I love, isn't exactly an offensively-minded defensiveman.

Los Angeles coach Marc Crawford knows what it takes to win the Stanley Cup. As a player with the Vancouver Canucks, Crawford advanced to the Stanley Cup in 1982 before his Canucks lost to the Islanders. As a coach, he won the Stanley Cup, leading the Colorado Avalanche to the 1996 crown, defeating Florida in four games.

After a well contested first period that was closely battled in Game 1 of the 2008 Stanley Cup finals, the final two periods were dominated by the Detroit Red Wings. Wings goaltender, Chris Osgood, got his 12th career postseason shutout, barely breaking a sweat as he faced 19 shots the entire game. The Wings shutout the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0.

On Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings ad Pittsburgh Penguins will face off in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Red Wings have home ice advantage for the series. You all know where my loyalties lie, but truthfully, I have no idea what to expect in the finals.

Okay, okay, I was hoping that the Penguins would get some pucks in net and that this series would be closely contested, but so far, it seems that the Red Wings are a crusher of dreams and feel invincible. It has been over 137 minutes and 33 seconds since Chris Osgood has let a goal in and it has been 120 minutes since Pittsburgh scored their last goal. Although the Pens have put in a great effort, Detroit is producing offense and perfect defense, and shutting the Penguins down offensively and more importantly, in their attempts to enter the neutral zone.

Congratulations to the Detroit Red Wings for winning the Stanley Cup last night in Game 6 in Pittsburgh.
After an incredibly thrilling Game 5 was stolen in triple overtime by the Penguins, the Red Wings came out strong and got the first two goals. The Penguins tried their best to come back, making it 2-1 before Detroit took a 3-1 lead in the third.

You can buy an octopus next week at Wholey's Fish Market in Pittsburgh -- unless you're wearing Detroit Red Wings gear or otherwise let slip that you're visiting from Michigan for the game.

Red Wings fans take their octopus-throwing tradition seriously, as Joe Louis Arena building operations manager Al Sobotka shows during this year's Stanley Cup playoffs.
Red Wings fans, known for their traditional octopus toss during the Stanley Cup playoffs, are welcome to buy any fish in the store, Dan Wholey, who owns the market, told the Detroit Free Press.
