Three Mile Island -- Thirty Years After
By William Tucker
On March 28, 1979, a minor valve failed in the cooling loop of a power plant on a sand bar in the middle of the Susquehanna River and the world became familiar with the name "Three Mile Island."
The country's first major nuclear accident was perhaps the greatest psychodrama of the era. For almost a week the world stood still and focused on Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

My husband works for the power department at a Fortune 500 company that provides engineering, design, construction, and maintenance to it's multinational clients. They are currently slated to begin construction on nuclear plants in the U.S.
Obviously, with an Obama administration, this project might - once again - face more set backs.

Penny-Wise And Megawatt Foolish

Energy: Among the Lilliputian cuts in the budget is the termination of the nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nev. Thus, a "shovel ready" renewable resource that emits no greenhouse gases is shoved aside.
As with missile defense, which also took a hit in the $17 billion worth of budget cuts that were like trimming the nose hair on a woolly mammoth, the future of nuclear power seems to be one of researching forever but building never.

Sweden changes course on nuclear power, opens for new reactors
By KARL RITTER | Associated Press Writer
9:57 AM EST, February 5, 2009
STOCKHOLM (AP) — The Swedish government agreed Thursday to scrap a three-decade ban on building new nuclear reactors, saying it needs to avoid producing more greenhouse gases.
Sweden is a leader on renewable energy but is struggling to develop alternative source like hydropower and wind to meet its growing energy demands. If parliament approves scrapping the ban, Sweden would join a growing list of countries rethinking nuclear power as a source of energy amid concerns over global warming and the reliability of energy suppliers such as Russia.

The battle among Republicans over what the party should stand for — and how much it should accommodate dissenting views on important issues — is probably going to move from the states to the Republican National Committee when it holds its winter meeting this January in Honolulu.
Republican leaders are circulating a resolution listing 10 positions Republican candidates should support to demonstrate that they “espouse conservative principles and public policies” that are in opposition to “Obama’s socialist agenda.” According to the resolution, any Republican candidate who broke with the party on three or more of these issues– in votes cast, public statements made or answering a questionnaire – would be penalized by being denied party funds or the party endorsement.
The proposed resolution was signed by 10 Republican national committee members and was distributed on Monday morning.

Twenty Years After the Fall
By George Friedman
We are now at the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the beginning of the collapse of the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. We are also nearing the 18th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union itself. This is more than simply a moment for reflection — it is a moment to consider the current state of the region and of Russia versus that whose passing we are now commemorating.

Glenn Harlan Reynolds: It's the follow-through that matters in New York's special race
By: Glenn Harlan Reynolds
Sunday Reflections Contributor
Next week's special congressional election in New York's 23rd Congressional District seems to have the entire political class in an uproar. Mainstream Republican pols like former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are afraid it portends a grass-roots revolt, or, worse, a third party for 2012.
Surging tea partiers hope it represents an opportunity to make mainstream Republican pols take them seriously.
