The cost of maintaining a home and appliances is often a major deterrent for those debating whether to rent or purchase a home. The unexpected expense of fixing leaky gutters and broken dishwashers can be budget breaking if it comes at the wrong time of month. Not to mention it's a huge pain.

A Tel Aviv woman has been searching through Israeli rubbish dumps after she said she accidentally threw away a mattress containing $1m (£700,000).
The woman, identified only as Anat, had bought a new mattress for her mother as a surprise and threw away the old one, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported. But when the older woman returned home she "almost fainted", as she had hidden her entire life savings inside.

Yesterday I was feeling pretty excited because after four months of waiting, next week I'm finally going home to see my boyfriend of three years. I'm currently overseas for work, but we're from different cities originally anyway.
But today, we were discussing travel plans for a work conference we're both going to. I thought we could stick around near the conference and have a little holiday afterwards. The thing is - my boyfriend still lives with his parents - in the suburbs and there's not much around. He still has a single bed. When I stay, I sleep on a mattress on his floor. It's not terrible, but I think I will start to feel awkward if I stay there for too long as there's not much privacy, so I want to spend some time away. I will visit my parents too, which he will probably join me in reluctantly, but I figure the more time away the better, especially as I'll be trying to get work done as well.

By Dalia Al-Achi in Damascus, Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria, October 2 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie called Friday on the international community not to forget the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees who remain in exile despite a relative improvement in the security situation in their homeland.
Tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians have returned to their country from Syria and other nearby countries over the past year, but many more are unable or unwilling to return to a country still rocked by violence. As the Iraqi story has largely disappeared from global headlines, so has the plight of the refugees.

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) – For their one-and-only family getaway this year, the Billingtons checked in to an upscale San Diego resort on Sunday with many of the usual vacation accessories -- bathing suits, board games and golf clubs.
But they also brought flashlights, sleeping bags and an inflatable mattress because the pool-side room they booked for just $19 comes with a tent where the beds normally would be. They even had to pack their own toilet paper.
