Eight years after the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Muslim Americans — particularly Muslim-American women — continue to face battles in their struggle for acceptance and the right to wear religious garb in public settings. A new poll from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life finds that Americans see Muslims as encountering more discrimination than any other religious group. But while Americans are more likely to be familiar with Islam or personally know a Muslim than they were at the time of the attacks, levels of tolerance are lower today than they were in the months immediately following Sept.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Florida school board voted late Monday night to keep the name of a Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader at a majority black high school, despite opposition from a black board member who said the school's namesake was a "terrorist and racist."
After hearing about three hours of public comments, Duval County School Board members voted 5-2 to the retain the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School.

((Sorry this is so long, and the language is rough...))
On a muggy Florida evening in 2008, I meet Iraq War veteran Forrest Fogarty in the Winghouse, a little bar-restaurant on the outskirts of Tampa, his favorite hangout. He told me on the phone I would recognize him by his skinhead. Sure enough, when I spot a white guy at a table by the door with a shaved head, white tank top and bulging muscles, I know it can only be him.

DENIED: Bigotry of the Obamatrons by Charles Winecoff
Recently, at the office (a place I sometimes affectionately refer to as Obama Central), I made the mistake of printing out a Washington Post editorial that questioned the foreign policy expertise of our new Commander-in-Chief. By the time I got to the printer to pick it up, someone else had already seen it - and stamped “DENIED” across the top of the page in red ink. Next to that was scrawled, “RIGHT WINGER GO HOME.”
The first thing that went through my mind was: cross burnings.

Named and shamed: the 16 barred from UK
By Beverley Rouse, Press Association
Tuesday, 5 May 2009
Talk show host Michael Savage - real name Michael Weiner - is on the banned list
Sixteen people banned from entering the UK were "named and shamed" by the Home Office today.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said she decided to make public the names of 16 people banned since October so others could better understand what sort of behaviour Britain was not prepared to tolerate.
The list includes hate preachers, anti-gay protesters and a far- right US talk show host.

Ghosts in a Texas Housing development
By Nita Hickok
I was asked to clear a housing development in Texas. The builders had purchased the land from a Catholic church to develop. It was near a town that was known for its racist and bigoted attitude.

Seven governors have been impeached and removed from office:
Willliam H. Holden (NC, 1871) Holden was removed after he sent a militia to quell violence by the Ku Klux Klan, and suspended the right of habeas corpus for accused Klan leaders.
David Butler (Neb, 1871) Butler was removed for misappropriating school funds, but the impeachment proceedings subsequently were expunged from the legislative record and in 1888 he was elected to another term as governor.

Hi All,
After some earlier postings today, I thought I'd share with the group this great article from 2003 that analyzes why terrorists are not a result of poverty or lack of education. (As most terrorists are well educated, did not grow up in poverty, speak multiple languages and carry with them more world experience than most Americans, not thus are breed from fundamentalist beliefs.)

Seeking the Roots of Terrorism
By ALAN B. KRUEGER and JITKA MALECKOVÁ
In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, a consensus quickly emerged that poverty and lack of education were major causes of terrorist acts and support for terrorism.
