Jerry Brown: Acorn, Suspicion and the Rule of Law
by Thomas Del Beccaro
According to the legendary Greek Historian Plutarch, when asked why he divorced his wife, Caesar stated that: “All women shall be as Caesar would have his wife, not only free from sin, but from suspicion.” At the time, Caesar’s wife, Pompeia, was loosely associated with the commission of a sacrilege by someone else. As recent events have confirmed, Attorney General Jerry Brown is hardly burdened by suspicions – let alone high ethical standards.

As most everyone in the political world now knows, ACORN is under investigation in many states, and by the federal government, for a host of crimes.

The California Supreme Court today upheld Proposition 8, the voter-approved law restoring a ban on same-sex marriages in the state, but at the same time left intact the more than 18,000 marriages for gay and lesbian couples who wed last year before the ballot measure went into effect.
The Supreme Court's decision puts California in unusual territory for the time being, establishing a two-tiered system of marriage across the state for same-sex couples. Under the ruling, Proposition 8 will continue to outlaw same-sex marriage in the future, but those gay and lesbian couples who got their marriage licenses before last November's election will remain on equal legal footing with heterosexual couples.

I saw this article yesterday and now I really want to read this book - The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University.
- Roose had transferred to the Virginia campus from Brown University in Providence, a famously liberal member of the Ivy League. His Liberty classmates knew about the switch, but he kept something more important hidden: He planned to write a book about his experience at the school founded by fundamentalist preacher Jerry Falwell.

With arrogance worthy of the Spanish Inquisition, leaders of the anti-civil rights "Proposition 8" group filed a brief 'commanding' the California Supreme Court to 'bow' to their will and nullify 18,000 marriages. In other words, "Happy Holidays, California! And here's your gift: a great big shiny box of lives destroyed."

Hey hey! It's your special day, gays and lesbians, as the California Supreme Court listens to arguments on whether to overturn Proposition 8, which outlawed gay marriage in the state of California only months after that same court declared marriage "an inalienable right". Crowds are gathered outside the courthouse in San Francisco to watch the hearing, but for the rest of you, stick around as we use this space throughout the day to give you live updates, Twitter feeds, video and interviews about the biggest constitutional case over gay marriage this country has ever seen.

Putting Government First
By Chris Reed on 1.19.09 @ 6:07AM
The idea that Democrats care more about the poor and the needy is an enduring American political stereotype -- and one of the party's most potent vote-getting tools. It's highly questionable whether Democrats' emphasis on government paternalism and a generous welfare state actually helps the downtrodden more than Republicans' recipe of economic growth and low taxes. But at least on a rhetorical basis, Democrats certainly do talk the most about the hurting.
