Republicans criticize report on right-wing groups
By EILEEN SULLIVAN
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans on Wednesday said a Homeland Security Department intelligence assessment unfairly characterizes military veterans as right-wing extremists. House Republican leader John Boehner described the report as offensive and called on the agency to apologize to veterans.
The agency's intelligence assessment, sent to law enforcement officials last week, warns that right-wing extremists could use the bad state of the U.S.

NYT: Obama aggressive on immigration
Despite vows, president relies heavily on predecessor’s policies on illegals
By Julia Preston

After early pledges by President Obama that he would moderate the Bush administration’s tough policy on immigration enforcement, his administration is pursuing an aggressive strategy for an illegal-immigration crackdown that relies significantly on programs started by his predecessor.
A recent blitz of measures has antagonized immigrant groups and many of Mr. Obama’s Hispanic supporters, who have opened a national campaign against them, including small street protests in New York and Los Angeles last week.

Homeland secretary apologizes to veterans group
By EILEEN SULLIVAN, Associated Press Writer Eileen Sullivan, Associated Press Writer – 2 hrs 34 mins ago
WASHINGTON – Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano met with the American Legion on Friday to apologize for a right-wing extremism report written by her agency, and the veterans group walked away from the meeting mollified.
Napolitano blamed one of her agency's analysts for prematurely sending out the intelligence assessment to law enforcement, according to Craig Roberts, an American Legion member who attended the meeting. The report says veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan could be susceptible to right-wing recruiters or commit lone acts of violence.

Napolitano stands by 'extremism' report
By Audrey Hudson (Contact) and Eli Lake (Contact) | Thursday, April 16, 2009
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said she was briefed before the release of a controversial intelligence assessment and that she stands by the report sent to law enforcement that lists veterans as a terrorist risk to the U.S. and defines "rightwing extremism" as including groups opposed to abortion and immigration.
The outcry resulted in a demand from the head of the American Legion to meet with Ms.

Eyes Shut at Homeland Security
By George H. Wittman on 3.13.09 @ 6:07AM
In an interview on PBS's "NewsHour" recently, the newly appointed Secretary of Homeland Security said with a straight face that there was no need for a security fence along the Mexican-United States border. According to Janet Napolitano, what was needed was enhanced surveillance cameras and more Border Patrol agents.

I am surprised that we ever survived as a country with all those "terrible" veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam living in our midst ("The Vet 'Threat,' " Ralph Peters, PostOpinion, April 16).
The last time I looked, the veterans from past wars turned out to be pretty good citizens.
It's too bad that the really dangerous people now in control of our government and media have decided to attack America's real heroes -- our military and our veterans.

The Thomas More Law Center (TMLC), an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based public interest law firm, announced in a press release last Thursday it had filed a federal lawsuit against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano. The lawsuit claims that DHS policies violate civil liberties.
The lawsuit specifically refers to the intelligence assessment report by DHS, titled “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.” The report was made public April 7.

The problem is they aren't just goofin'
By Glenn Garvin
You know what they say about monkeys, typewriters and Shakespeare. My question is, if you sat an infinite number of Joe Bidens at an infinite number of microphones, would any of them ever say anything that wasn't infinitely stupid? From his reminiscences about Franklin Roosevelt's famous White House television address on the day of the 1929 stock market crash (that is, three years before Roosevelt was president and 20 years before Americans bought TVs) to his campaign-rally exhortation to Missouri state Sen.
