We're Governed by Callous Children
Americans feel increasingly disheartened, and our leaders don't even notice.
The new economic statistics put growth at a healthy 3.5% for the third quarter.

Last week, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform approved a bill to provide paid parental leave to federal workers and thus make government employment more attractive. The committee's ranking Republican, Rep. Darrell Issa of California, reportedly opposed the measure because he fears, among other things, that rascally federal workers will scam the system, piling up child after child just to claim the four weeks of paid leave.

Flip-Flops and Governance
Our president isn't quite as advertised.
By KARL ROVE (WSJ)
Barack Obama inherited a set of national-security policies that he rejected during the campaign but now embraces as president. This is a stunning and welcome about-face.

Chrysler Won't Pay Back Government Money Loaned So Far. Buried in the Chrysler filings was the revelation that US government investments in Chrysler will not be paid back, though the government will probably take an 8% equity interest in Chrysler:
Chrysler LLC will not repay U.S. taxpayers more than $7 billion in bailout money it received earlier this year and as part of its bankruptcy filing.

Putting Government First
By Chris Reed on 1.19.09 @ 6:07AM
The idea that Democrats care more about the poor and the needy is an enduring American political stereotype -- and one of the party's most potent vote-getting tools. It's highly questionable whether Democrats' emphasis on government paternalism and a generous welfare state actually helps the downtrodden more than Republicans' recipe of economic growth and low taxes. But at least on a rhetorical basis, Democrats certainly do talk the most about the hurting.

With the current Joe the Plumber/spread the wealth/tax hikes/tax cuts debates going around, I'm thinking more and more about the government's role in the finances of its constituents - and, to a further point, the government's overall role in our country. I think this issue is the key ideological difference between the left and the right.
What do you consider the government's ultimate role to be?

Government wants saltwater anglers to register, pay fee

From the Press of Atlantic City: http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/186/story/180852.html
Saltwater anglers would need to register with the federal government to go fishing next year, and starting in 2011 pay an annual fee between $15 and $25.
The goal of the proposal is to assemble a better database of recreational fishermen so they can be interviewed more thoroughly on what they catch. This information would be used to better manage fisheries.

TOKYO - Japan's air force has never spotted a UFO, but the country's top government spokesman said Tuesday he "definitely" believes they exist.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura was speaking to reporters in response to demands lodged by an opposition lawmaker for an inquiry into "frequent reports of UFO sightings."
The government said in an official reply that it had "not confirmed sightings of unidentified flying objects believed to be from outer space."
