George Carlin mourned as counterculture hero By KEITH ST. CLAIR, Associated Press Writer
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080623/ap_en_tv/obit_george_carlin
George Carlin, who died of heart failure Sunday at 71, leaves behind not only a series of memorable routines, but a legal legacy: His most celebrated monologue, a frantic, informed riff on those infamous seven words, led to a Supreme Court decision on broadcasting offensive language.
The counterculture hero's jokes also targeted things such as misplaced shame, religious hypocrisy and linguistic quirks — why, he once asked, do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

A Master of Words, Including Some You Can’t Use in a Headline

Stand-up comedy in America is not, for the most part, a long-lived profession. Comics burn out, go stale, lose their edge. Some, like Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, almost literally consume themselves.

George Carlin, the edgy comedian and counterculture icon, died Sunday at the age of 71.
The stand-up comic and author – best known for his groundbreaking routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" – reportedly died of heart failure at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica. (Carlin, who was open about his long struggle with drugs and alcohol, had a history of heart problems, including a previous heart attack.)
In 1978, the bearded comedian famous for his clever wordplay and often-explicit commentary on sex, drugs and the absurdities of modern life found himself in the middle of a court battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court.

George Carlin On Who Rules America
George Carlin follows in the footsteps of Lenny Bruce as
he brilliantly dissects the political and media landscape
from the comedy stage. He is tragically funny and one is
left thinking long after the laughter subsides.

I think this bit from George Carlin sums up a lot of great observations/arguments surrounding almost any debate about abortion, pro-life/pro-choice stances, and religion's role in this debate. It's good to see in its original context as well, as part of his routine, so I bet it's out on YouTube as well. It's a bit brusque, but hey, if it wasn't, then it wouldn't be Carlin, right?
