On a balmy autumn day in Vancouver, a young man is longing for a walk outside in the sunshine, and deciding against it. Far easier for him to stay in his hotel room, cocooned in five-star luxury with a mobile phone that has run out of charge, safe at least from the girls chanting his name outside. Robert Pattinson, 23 and from Barnes in southwest London, ought still to be one of Hollywood’s beautiful dreamers, moving up the ranks of movie acting, enjoying his American adventure, his guitar, his good looks.

Falsely accused man: Hofstra rape probe was rushed
September 17, 2009 by KEITH HERBERT AND DANIEL EDWARD ROSEN / keith.herbert@newsday.com
Nassau officials should have been more thorough before they arrested, publicly vilified and locked up four men accused of raping a Hofstra University student who later recanted her story, one of the men said Wednesday.
"I think they should have gathered more evidence . .

NYT: Obama aggressive on immigration
Despite vows, president relies heavily on predecessor’s policies on illegals
By Julia Preston
The New York Times
updated 5:29 a.m. ET, Tues., Aug 4, 2009
After early pledges by President Obama that he would moderate the Bush administration’s tough policy on immigration enforcement, his administration is pursuing an aggressive strategy for an illegal-immigration crackdown that relies significantly on programs started by his predecessor.
A recent blitz of measures has antagonized immigrant groups and many of Mr. Obama’s Hispanic supporters, who have opened a national campaign against them, including small street protests in New York and Los Angeles last week.

California's Central Valley produces many of the fruits and vegetables consumed in America. It is also one of the poorest areas of the country. There are high rates of malnutrition and obesity, and residents have little access to fresh produce themselves.

Are You an ‘Extremist’?
By Thomas Sowell
While the rest of us may be worried about violent Mexican drug gangs on our border, or about terrorists who are going to be released from Guantanimo, the Director of Homeland Security is worried about "right-wing extremists."
Just who are these right-wing extremists?

Stage of Fools
If only Shakespeare had known how to Twitter.
There was a bit of King Lear in the scene on the Senate floor, a stormy, solitary John McCain on “this great stage of fools,” as the Bard wrote, railing against both parties and the president in fiery speeches and rapid-fire tweets.
“He’s mad that trusts in the tameness of a wolf, a horse’s health, a boy’s love, or a whore’s oath,” the Fool told Lear.
