A meme that is currently picking up traction in the conservative blogosphere is that the list of dealerships to be shuttered as a result of Chrysler's bankruptcy contains a disproportionate number donors to Republican candidates. There have been furious efforts to prove this contention by looking up campaign contributor lists at the Huffington Post, Open Secrets, and other places.
There is just one problem with this theory.

Look in later today for our On the Road piece from Wilmington, North Carolina. We're a bit ahead of our coverage, which occasionally happens out here with the long distances, input, output and timing demands. Tonight we'll be at the Obama-Clinton rally in Kissimmee, Florida, and we're breaking in from Miami, where John McCain just concluded his "Joe the Plumber" rally at Everglades Lumber.

I read a few things from the McCain camp that the race is "tightening", but what exactly does this mean, and is this true?
For all my polling/stats needs, I visit Nate Silver's (stats whiz) fivethirtyeight.com, and he's not exactly in agreement. He explains what would need to happen in order for a tight race to occur, and although anything can happen, his numbers for McCain do not look good at the moment.

An Interview with John Ziegler on the Zogby "Push Poll"
From Fivethirtyeight.com
I had the chance this afternoon to speak with John Ziegler, a documentary filmmaker and former radio talk show host who built the website HowObamaGotElected.com and is promoting a forthcoming documentary of the same name.
Ziegler was responsible for commissioning a Zogby International survey of Barack Obama supporters, which took the form of a multiple choice political knowledge test, stating a "fact" to the respondent and asking them which of the four major candidates (Obama, McCain, Biden, Palin) the statement applied to. Because I believe that many of the statements on the survey are questionable or false but are misleadingly presented as factual to the respondent, I characterized the survey as a "push poll" in an article posted early this morning.

This is from www.fivethirtyeight.com
In 2004, Ashley Faulkner looked into the camera and said of George W. Bush, "He's the most powerful man in the world, and all he wants to do is make sure I'm safe, that I'm OK."
It was powerful.

So those lines at the bottom of the screen, for men and women, did you find them riveting? Or did you think they were sort of distracting? I watched them at first, but then kind of forgot about them.

McCain Doubling Down on Debate?
A somewhat contrarian view:
I really can't imagine John McCain not attending the debate tomorrow. Although it's hard to know exactly how the spectacle would play out -- Obama fielding questions from Jim Lehrer by himself?
