A charitable group co-founded by Hollywood A-listers George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon announced on Thursday it had given $500,ooo to the United Nations World Food Program to help stop hunger in Darfur.
The WFP uses helicopters to send support people and food to Northern Sudan and more specifically into the Darfur region that, over recent years, has seen a giant influx of refugees in the war ravaged area.
“Without immediate additional funding, humanitarian aid in the region will be crippled,” Clooney said in a statement obtained by the A.P.

Darfur protest: 5 congressmen arrested outside Sudanese Embassy in Washington
By Rebecca Cole | Washington Bureau
April 28, 2009
WASHINGTON -- Five members of Congress and three humanitarian activists were arrested Monday on civil disobedience charges in front of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington for protesting "crimes against humanity."
In attempting to draw attention to Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's handling of the Darfur region, the protesters called on Bashir to reinstate 16 aid organizations he expelled or shut down last month in response to the International Criminal Court issuing a warrant for his arrest.
Several also called on President Barack Obama to pressure the international community, including China, a major trading partner with Sudan, for a solution to the violence in Darfur.

George Clooney and Don Cheadle will be sharing a prestigious honor for their efforts to bring peace to Africa's war-torn Darfur region, awarded by a collection of Nobel laureates.
The 8th World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates – a group that includes former Soviet President Michael Gorbachev, former President Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu – will present the actors with the 2007 Peace Summit Award at its annual meeting in Rome next month.
Clooney and Cheadle are being honored for promoting peace in Darfur and "for their commitment to saving human lives and alleviating the suffering of civilian victims of the conflict," the World Summit announced Monday.
