Washington has offered to resume talks on legal immigration by Cubans to the US, the US state department says. It says the move aims to "reaffirm both sides' commitment to safe, legal and orderly migration". The talks were halted in 2003 after Havana refused to give exit permits to people who had been granted US visas.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tore into President Barack Obama Monday for his friendly greeting of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, saying Obama is bolstering the "enemies of America.”
Gingrich appeared on a number of morning talk shows comparing Obama to President Jimmy Carter for the smiling, hearty handshake he offered Chavez, one of the harshest critics of the United States, during the Summit of the Americas.
“Frankly, this does look a lot like Jimmy Carter. Carter tried weakness, and the world got tougher and tougher, because the predators, the aggressors, the anti-Americans, the dictators – when they sense weakness, they all start pushing ahead,” Gingrich said on “Fox & Friends.”
Two Republican senators, Judd Gregg of New Hampshire and John Ensign of Nevada, joined in the criticism Monday, with Ensign calling Obama's greeting of Chavez "irresponsible."

HAVANA – Fidel Castro says President Barack Obama "misinterpreted" his brother Raul's remarks regarding the United States and bristled at the suggestion that Cuba should free political prisoners or cut taxes on remittances from abroad as a goodwill gesture to the U.S.
Raul Castro touched off a whirlwind of speculation last week that the U.S. and Cuba could be headed toward a thaw in nearly a half-century of chilly relations.

A History Lesson
In the late 1950's most Cubans thought Cuba needed "a change" and they were right. So when a young, dynamic leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive. When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him.

Here’s one of those films that you see on the Oscar ballot and just laugh out loud. And then just cry because it means you’ll have to watch it…
This was close to being the most painful film I had to watch thanks to my little quest this year. This film follows Norbit (Eddie Murphy), an orphan who doesn’t often speak up for himself and therefore gets suckered into an overpowering relationship with Rasputia (also Murphy), until he reunites with a girl from his past, fellow orphan Kate Thomas (Thandie Newton).
