FrankTeacherNEW YORK (July 20) – Frank McCourt, the beloved raconteur and former public school teacher who enjoyed post-retirement fame as the author of "Angela's Ashes," the Pulitzer Prize-winning "epic of woe" about his impoverished Irish childhood, died Sunday of cancer.
McCourt, who was 78, had been gravely ill with meningitis and recently was treated for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. He died at a Manhattan hospice, his brother Malachy McCourt said.Until his mid-60s, Frank McCourt was known primarily around New York as a creative writing teacher and as a local character — the kind who might turn up in a New York novel — singing songs and telling stories with his younger brother Malachy and otherwise joining the crowds at the White Horse Tavern and other literary hangouts.

I posted about this a while ago, and the Court made their decision in favor of the white firefighters who were denied promotions. This ruling could potentially change employment practices nationwide.

Reading tea leaves is a favorite game played by Supreme Court watchers, despite the fact that it's never going to reveal much. Government institutions regularly leak information -- but not the high court.

The Lord Justice Hath Ruled: Pringles Are Potato Chips
By ADAM COHEN
Britain’s Supreme Court of Judicature has answered a question that has long puzzled late-night dorm-room snackers: What, exactly, is a Pringle? With citations ranging from Baroness Hale of Richmond to Oliver Wendell Holmes, Lord Justice Robin Jacob concluded that, legally, it is a potato chip.
The decision is bad news for Procter & Gamble U.K., which now owes $160 million in taxes.

Troubled pop star Britney Spears will return to court next month to revisit her ongoing illegal driving case.
The trial was originally scheduled to begin in January but a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled in favor of the star’s conservatorship attorneys, who charged she was incapable of issuing a deposition at the time - due to much-publicized health issues.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has turned down an emergency appeal from a New Jersey man who says President-elect Barack Obama is ineligible to be president because he was a British subject at birth.
The court did not comment on its order Monday rejecting the call by Leo Donofrio of East Brunswick, N.J., to intervene in the presidential election. Donofrio says that since Obama had dual nationality at birth _ his mother was American and his Kenyan father at the time was a British subject _ he cannot possibly be a "natural born citizen," one of the requirements the Constitution lists for eligibility to be president.

I’m not exactly sure what Denise Richards is famous for, I thought she was a glamor model (as in, posed in Playboy a few times) but apparently she also had a film career. Then she got too old to swan about nude, which for most of us was around 4 but for her it was 30, so now she stars on a reality television show. Despite her nudity and topless paparazzi chasing (NSFW), the show isn’t drawing in viewers, so she’s decided to drag out her divorce/custody battle.
