I have a friend who is going through a really tough time. She is mentally ill and was badly abused by her parents as a child, so staying with them is not something she wants to do. She stayed at my house for several days to get away from her husband.

Most of my life I've often wondered why Thanksgiving seemed to be for many families a trigger word for family dysfuction. Why individuals couldn't just let that disagreement with another family member go for one bloody day and enjoy some good food and conversation with more pleasant family members. I have to keep reminding my self that I'm pragmatic by nature and that is apparently unusual.
I found an article with some helpful tips.
Holidays are meant to be happy, joyous and life-affirming times.

Twenty Years After the Fall
By George Friedman
We are now at the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the beginning of the collapse of the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. We are also nearing the 18th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union itself. This is more than simply a moment for reflection — it is a moment to consider the current state of the region and of Russia versus that whose passing we are now commemorating.

I know it isn't anywhere CLOSE to a real happy hour in my side of the world right now but I could use a tall one. I think I'll just get a smoothie.
I ask you.... Do you know a buckethead? Have you ever been a buckethead? I have and it isn't fun. What is a "buckethead" anyway?
My definition of a "buckethead" is as follows: A real buckethead stumbles around thinking good thoughts, attempting to do good deeds but somehow they backfire on them. ...because that bucket on their head (often my head) obscures the view...making it hard to really point those good intentions in the right direction. Other times that bucket seems to prevent good intentions from coming to the person wearing it---because they can't see the good intentions either.

A former Marine captain who became the first foreign service official to publicly resign in protest over the war in Afghanistan says staying in the country is not in America's interest.
"The losses of our soldiers do not merit anything that comes in line with our strategic interests or values," Matthew Hoh, who signed on as a foreign service official in Afghanistan after fighting in Iraq, tells NPR's Melissa Block.
Hoh resigned last month after spending five working months in Afghanistan.

No men OR women needed: Scientists create sperm and eggs from stem cells
By Fiona Macrae
Human eggs and sperm have been grown in the laboratory in research which could change the face of parenthood.
It paves the way for a cure for infertility and could help those left sterile by cancer treatment to have children who are biologically their own.
But it raises a number of moral and ethical concerns.

Alan Ball gave an interview with Advocate and he let some good information slip regarding Season 3 drop.
We'll be meeting the vampire king of Mississippi and his long, long-term companion -- and by long-term I mean really long-term -- Talbot. I think Lafayette may meet a love interest, and certainly Pam, who works with Eric, she's certainly got a lesbian vibe -- I don't know that that's all she is, but she certainly does seem to appreciate the women.

Electronic communication can both help and hurt a relationship. On one hand, it encourages constant communication and may make you feel closer to one another. On the other — this constant communication may make you feel suffocated.
