BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese couple tried to name their baby "@," claiming the character used in e-mail addresses echoed their love for the child, an official trying to whip the national language into line said Thursday.
The unusual name stands out especially in Chinese, which has no alphabet and instead uses tens of thousands of multi-stroke characters to represent words.

I ran into a friend this weekend, who's about 7 months pregnant. I asked her how everything was going, and she said "fine", but then I found out that a friend of hers just gave birth, and named her son the name her and her husband picked out for the name of their baby. As far as celebrity baby names go, Nahla Ariela is not bad. It does have a Disney ring to it, probably due to the Little Mermaid-sounding middle name. I’ve never heard the name Nahla before and it sounds kind of neutral to me for a little girl’s name, but maybe I just need to get used to it.
