Alcohol consumption is linked to one in every 25 deaths worldwide, according to a study that concludes the effects of drinking are as harmful as smoking.
In a series of articles published in The Lancet, alcohol is linked to behavioral deaths, like violent injuries, as well as medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, cancer and liver disorders like cirrhosis.
The study found that 3.8 percent of deaths around the world in 2004 (the most recent year for data) were related to drinking - 6.3 percent for men, 1.8 percent for women.

The number of young people suffering from liver disease caused by alcohol has more than doubled since Labour came to power.
Damning figures show 6,495 Britons aged 18 to 40 were admitted to hospital suffering from alcoholic liver disease in 2006/07, compared to 2,967 a decade ago.
In the same period, there were 43,548 admissions across all age groups for the disease, with a further 27,040 cases related to the toxic effects of alcohol.

Pink actually thought she was an alcoholic after realizing that she can't have fun without a few drinks. So this past summer she checked into a health center to try and do something about the problem.

I've never been much for drinking or partying, since I've never really hung out with the crowd that does those things. When I finally graduated high school, I got wasted on my grad night. It was actually my first time being drunk.

Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers, 31, seemed to go into a tailspin after the unimely death of his mother. But now he says he has tamed his alcohol addiction inspired by the memory of his mother.
Jonathan’s mother Geraldine Meyers-O’Keeffe suffered a stroke in November (07), and Meyers turned to drink in a bid to cope with the news.

Nick Nolte’s girlfriend introduced him to a strange way to stop drinking. She invited her Hare Krishna friends over to their house and they started having drum circles and chanting. The four principles of the Hindu Hare Krishna movement are strict vegetarianism with no meat, fish or eggs, no sex for non-procreation purposes, no gambling and no intoxication which includes alcohol, caffeine and tobacco.
