Ladies, It's Time to Pop the Question!

Supposedly an old British custom had it that women were allowed to propose on leap year day, today, February 29, and their object of affection wasn't allowed to turn to them down! Obviously in contemporary society, there are no written rules about female marriage proposals; however, while there are many notions of romance that have become somewhat old-fashioned in our culture, like saving ourselves for marriage, society still seems to think that it should be the man who gets down on bended knee.

Sure, there are many couples that reach a mutual decision on marriage, but when you hear about those grand or endearingly thoughtful proposals, it always seems to be the man’s doing. I want to know why ladies don’t plan romantic proposals for their guys. Or do they? Do you think that the male-only proposal is outdated? Would you ever be the one to pop the question?

Would You Propose to Him?

A few weeks ago, I was talking to my yoga instructor after class. We were chatting about relationships and such, and somehow it came up that she proposed to her boyfriend (now husband). She said that she loved him deeply and was ready to be engaged but didn't want to wait around for him to pop the question so she just did it.

I thought her story was really amazing and it made me realize just how much times have changed for women. We now have well-paying jobs, professional careers, we can run for President, and do just about everything men can do (except pee standing up), so why shouldn't we propose?

I happen to be very traditional when it comes to getting married so I wouldn't be the one to propose in my relationship, but what do you think? Would you ever propose to your man? Or do you think it's the guy's job to get down on bended knee?

Chick Lit Comes in All Different Sizes

As far as I knew, literary characters already came in all different shapes and sizes, but apparently there's a "publishing phenomenon" sweeping America like a fad diet: curvy chick lit characters who fully accept their weight.

The UK Guardian explains that average-sized women want to relate to the heroines they read about - and they don't want the stories to be all about dieting. Titles that fit under the "big chit lit" umbrella include The Wife's Tale, a book about a woman who turns her life around (not by losing weight!) after her universe shrunk "to a well-worn path from the bedroom to the refrigerator," and Last-Minute Proposal, the story of cake-baker Tilly and the man who loves her cozy curves.

Empire State Building Proposal Gone Wrong

Believe it or not, the Empire State Building is a popular place to propose to people and to get married. Apparently, it's also an awesome place to get turned down with style. What better place than 102 stories above pavement to have your beloved ask you, "What the f*ck are you doing?" right before you're about to pop the question. Sweet.

Remember playing the game "telephone" as a child? You whisper something to the person next to you who whispers it to the person next to them, and then by the time it reached the last person, the message was totally distorted. Here's an adult version, with an adult outcome. 59 people repeat a message one man sends to his ultimate recipient - the woman he wants to marry.

Public proposals often seem staged or end unhappily, but this whisper campaign, though it takes a while to complete, has a happy ending and was surprisingly moving to me. Hooray for the happy couple!

Sprite Wants Us to Think It Tastes Like a Bodily Fluid

With all the sexually-charged commercials out there, I thought dirty ad executives could shock me no more. Well a proposed German commercial for Sprite has managed to upset my sensibilities once again by combining oral sex, a desire for Sprite, and a climactic finish. The ad crosses the line from racy to pornographic.

Creating a controversial commercial that ended up banned in Germany does create buzz for the brand. (They got us to talk about Sprite.) But I'm just not sure that comparing Sprite to semen is working for the product here. What do they want us to think? Semen - the taste that refreshes! NOT.

Sprite isn't the first company to have women perform sex acts on a product. Remember Burger King's ad in Singapore that had a woman attempting oral sex on a BK Super Seven Incher? Do you think the trend of pornographic ads will continue with success, or do you predict a backlash?

I-Do Don'ts: Don't Turn Your Marriage Proposal Into a Musical

Oh, the magic. You want to propose to your girlfriend in public? Fine. Do it in a restaurant. Do it on top of the Empire State Building. Do it on the street in Disney World. But for Peter Pan's sake do not turn it into an improv musical and horrify your sweet bride-to-be into saying yes.

I have my doubts about how real this is, but it's still terrifying! A middle-aged woman in a wheelchair zips into center~~stage~~ street while pointing at the girl and singing. And, then, proposal man can't find the ring. Did he lose it? Did he give to you? Or you, or you, or you? No! It's all part of the act. In sweeps a street cleaner who chirps "I might have it!" Right here in this used cup.

Oh Snap! Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

Talk about getting inside a woman's head. As a sippy-cup-clutching toddler looks on, Aaron Weisinger, 26, proposes to his girlfriend Erica Breder inside the Statue of Liberty's crown. Though the rest of the monument reopened in 2004, July 4 was the first time since Sept. 11 that a select number of tourists could ascend to the very top.
