What's Up With Not Wearing Your Wedding Ring?

I'm sure you all noticed - if not that night, by now after seeing all the coverage - that Michelle Obama was not wearing her wedding ring on inauguration night. Since she wore that enormous diamond sparkler on her left middle finger, her wedding band might have been too much, but its absence sure has people talking!

Leaving the symbolic token of marriage at home doesn't necessarily mean anything, but what's your take on giving the ring a rest every once in a while? Would/do you ever do it, or are you the type to wear your rings all the time, no matter the occasion?

Where Do You Stand? Selling Memories For Money

The state of our economy is worsening by the day, and many women are now hocking their old engagement and weddings rings that they were holding onto for sentimental value in exchange for cold hard cash. According to an article in today's Daily News, October was the busiest month (in visits and sales) for IDoNowIDont.com - an online marketplace for secondhand rings.

Even though these women aren't getting anywhere near the value of their goods, desperate times are clearly calling for desperate measures. If you're feeling the effects of the economy like so many of us, tell me, is this something you'd ever consider doing? Where do you stand on selling your memories for money?

Relationship Protocol: Wedding Rings

Wearing a wedding ring represents something different to every married couple. Most consider it a symbol of their union, but some look at it as just a really nice piece of jewelry! Of course wearing a ring won't guarantee fidelity or life-long happiness, but it sure does act as a constant reminder of the vow you took to love and honor your partner.

I think it's more common for men to opt out of wearing a wedding ring than it is for women, so how would you feel if your husband didn't want to wear one? Would it be a source of contention or would you understand his desire to be ring free?

We've all had at least one relationship that died, but what if your relationship had been consecrated by marriage? How do you truly move on and feel some closure? Sure, you can become a barfly, travel to India, or start "journaling," but that's not true closure. True closure is taking your wedding ring and putting it in a Wedding Ring Coffin. Lay it to rest. Then, and only then, will you be able to move on.

Love It or Leave It? Disney-Inspired Engagement Rings

Some girls never let go of their wish to be princesses, and thanks to designer Kristie Kelly, they don't have to. The Kirstie Kelly for Disney by Mouwad collection, shown at Bridal Week in New York, features six engagement rings and wedding bands that pay homage to Disney's leading princesses.

The engagement rings, named after Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, and Belle are supposed to be "subtle references to the personalities of each princess." For example, the baguettes and clean lines of the Ariel ring are supposed to reference the bold style of art deco and Ariel's "bold individuality."

Although I was never a fan of princesses, have no plans of getting married anytime soon, and would feel sheepish taking a leap into adulthood wearing a Disney-inspired engagement ring, I do fancy the look of the Sleeping Beauty ring. What do you feel about this collection?

When I meet someone new - male or female - I often find myself glancing down at the left-hand ring finger to see if he or she is wearing a wedding band. I can't help it: I think it's funny that such a small symbol can reveal such a big fact. Are you guilty of this?

Does a Ring on That Finger Only Mean One Thing?

Since I'm neither married nor engaged, I've never thought twice about wearing a ring on my left-hand ring finger, especially a big, chunky ring that's a far cry from a solitaire diamond. But a few weeks ago, I was at a party, and some dude spotted one of the big, chunky rings in question and asked, "Are you engaged?" I wanted to answer, "um, yeah . . . to a clown."

Wedding rings are super-traditional, but they are a handy way to tell if people are attached or not. However, until you're betrothed, I say wear any ol' ring you want. Do you agree, or do you prefer to leave that finger blank until it's loaded with something symbolic?

Getting engaged is one of the most exciting times in a woman's life, but as you know, not all engagements have a happy ending. Since the engagement ring is the symbol of a couple's commitment. it's important for the woman to be happy with what she's given. But how is the man supposed to know unless he asks her what she wants? Well if he does that, the cat's out of the bag, so what's a guy to do? While I wouldn't want to be unpleasantly surprised (remember Carrie and Aidan?), I also wouldn't want to know what to expect. This is a very personal choice so ladies, do tell, would you rather pick out your ring with your boyfriend or be completely surprised?

Awkward! Reusing a Ring Designed For a Previous Engagement

An engagement ring has so much symbolic value that people often get a little obsessed with its design, cost, and the method in which it's presented. A reader writes in with the following question:

"I was previously engaged and the engagement was broken. The ring that I wore was one that I designed with my mother and grandmother to become a family heirloom and was purchased by my family. My ex had nothing to do with the picking out or paying for the ring.

I am now in a relationship with someone else and we have been discussing marriage. He knows about the ring that my mother now has and has no objection to giving it to me if we were to get engaged. We have also discussed getting it engraved or adding a band to it. Is it tacky to 'reuse' this ring?"

What do you think - is it OK for her to reuse this ring? Any engagement ring sagas to share?
