Fox Renews Touch, Cancels Alcatraz and The Finder

Although Fox's Upfront presentation isn't until next week, the network has already come forward with some bittersweet news. They've renewed the Kiefer Sutherland drama Touch for a second season, but Alcatraz and The Finder have both been axed.

J.J. Abrams's supernatural action series Alcatraz might not be dead and buried yet; the show is reportedly being shopped around at other networks, so there is a chance it could be revived. Unfortunately, Bones spinoff The Finder is most likely done forever. If you're a fan, be sure to catch the finale Friday night for one last goodbye to the series.

Kiefer Sutherland Talks About Coming Back to TV For New Drama Touch

It's Fox's turn today to show off its new shows at the Winter TCA, and the first panel featured a Fox alum we can't wait to see more of: Kiefer Sutherland. The star is headlining new drama Touch, as a man whose son has the ability to see hidden patterns that connect people all over the world. The mystical-sounding series is from Heroes creator Tim Kring, and he, Sutherland, and the other stars of the series talked about Sutherland's 24 legacy and what we can expect from Touch.

Sutherland insisted that though his new character is very different from Jack Bauer, he didn't choose Touch to distance himself from 24, but did call it a "a nice diversion" from the series. He said that when he first got a call about doing the show, he was performing in a play, and wasn't interested at first because he wanted more time apart from 24. When he read the script, though, "it spoke to me on a really profound level."
Sutherland's character Martin Bohm isn't like Jack Bauer, he says, and the focus is more about Martin being a father to his autistic, gifted son. But Sutherland does see a parallel between Bohm and Bauer: imperfection. "Jack Bauer was asked to save the day and there was always going to be casualties . . . it was never going to the perfect win." Of Bohm, he's "never going to have a perfect relationship with his son."
The other star of the show is David Mazouz, the young actor who plays Martin's son Jake (if you're a fan of The Office, you'll recognize him as Robert California's son). The character, who "sees" patterns through numbers and other sensations, has an acting challenge in that he doesn't actually talk. But Mazouz said, "I don't think Jake needs to speak, because he does communicate through his father, through his numbers." Executive producer Francis Lawrence praised Mazouz for his work on the character, saying, "David really worked on mannerisms, posture, the way he holds himself."
Sutherland assured reporters that his commitment to Touch doesn't preclude him from doing a 24 movie. He didn't have many details on the movie itself, but he did reveal that they'll hopefully begin shooting at the end of April or the beginning of May.

Cuddle Parties - Cool or Crazy?

"Hug-starved Americans are queuing up to squeeze total strangers," if we believe today's Daily Mail. While most of us are reluctant to touch people we don't know, some people crave nonsexual physical contact and are willing to get it from strangers at cuddle parties.

One company, simply named Cuddle Party, charges about $10 a session. They have rules too, the first three being:

Pajamas stay on the whole time.
You don’t have to cuddle anyone at a Cuddle Party, ever.
You must ask permission and receive a verbal YES before you touch anyone. (Be as specific in your request as you can.)

I don't know if rule number two assures me or freaks me out, since it suggests you can go just to watch. As creepy as it might seem, it could be good for your health, though: research shows that people who cuddle are less likely to become depressed. What do you make of it?

Turn On or Turn Off: The Touchy Feely Flirt

The dating world is filled with all types of men. There's the elusive, practically perfect gentleman, the drunk and disorderly jerk, and everything in between. But there's something inherently intimate about a guy who uses the familiar powers of touch to create a connection. Obviously there's a difference between a few light brushes and inappropriate groping, but I think some touching inevitably establishes a temporary closeness. While I'm personally a fan of the more subtle approach, I can see how the familiarity of a touchy-feely flirt can be seriously appealing. What do you think? Is a man who uses the powers of touch a turn on or turn off for you?

Relationship Protocol: Is Constant Affection a Relationship Necessity?

Outside of sex, physical affection is still a significant part of any relationship. It’s a way for couples to express their desire, devotion, and connection without saying a word. With the stresses and demands of daily life, what begins as a very affectionate relationship can end up being one in which a quick kiss or cuddle on the couch is all a couple has time for on a given day. Like saying “I love you,” for some couples the show of affection remains a rare, but nevertheless, special occurrence. It may not be ideal, but do you think that a relationship with limited affection can still be a healthy one? Or do you find constant affection a necessity? If so, how do you and your significant other express it outside of the bedroom?

A friend invites you out with her boyfriend because she misses you. Even though you hate to be a third wheel, you agree to go because you’re trying to be a good friend. At first things are fine, but as the night wears on, your friend and her man keep getting more and more physical. If he's not brushing his fingers over her neck and chest, then she's running her hands through his hair.

The excessive PDA is getting old, and you go the bathroom to get it away from it for a while. You’re sure it can’t get much worse, but when you get back to the table, they’re fully groping each other and making out. You're totally grossed out, but you feel uncomfortable interrupting them, so how do you handle this?
