TV Showing More Violence Against Women

I typically avert my eyes when graphic scenes flash across my television screen, so it boggles my mind that violence is such a celebrated form of entertainment. A new report from the Parents Television Council suggests that the prevalence of violence on TV is getting even more disturbing. The report reveals that violence against women and teen girls is up 120 percent, while violence shown on television general has raised by only two percent in recent years.

Questions remain about the conservative group's study. For example, it doesn't precisely define what it considers "violence." Still, the results cannot be completely ignored. Showing more examples of violence against women could desensitize viewers and make it appear more acceptable.

The Parents Television Council is calling for more government regulation against such violence on TV. Do you support that, or should viewers censor what they watch themselves?

During the 2008 election, Oprah declined to welcome sensational VP-candidate Sarah Palin to her couch. The talk show host and very public Barack Obama supporter said she wouldn't have any candidate on her show until the election was over. Now that the election seems like ages ago and Sarah Palin has a new book to hawk, the two will finally have a chat when Oprah interviews Palin on her Nov. 16 show.

I can't wait to tune in to this interview! While Palin makes it clear that she disdains the media's "liberal bias," Oprah hasn't been so shy about having one. Are you excited to see Oprah go rogue with Sarah Palin?

The Women Behind the (Mad) Men

Considering that Mad Men is everywhere these days (Vanity Fair has an extensive piece on the show this month, and I've noticed on my walks to work that Banana Republic is holding casting calls?!), I decided to break down and catch up on the series before the third season premiere Aug. 16. All I can say is that I'm quickly becoming obsessed with all things '60s fashion and doing my best to remember that cigarettes are not cool.

Now that I'm hooked on the show, I was excited to read all about the women behind the series in today's Wall Street Journal. Ironically, Mad Men's writing team is dominated by women even though, just like 1960s Madison Avenue, a female-dominate writing team is a rarity in modern Hollywood. But on Mad Men, the women writers have brought authenticity to the characters in the show's chauvinistic world, especially the female characters. In the WSJ article, the writers recount a debate they had about whether housewife Betty Draper should have a one-night stand. Although the male writers were against it, they were outnumbered by the women who thought she had to if she was going to take her cheating husband back. Sometimes two wrongs do make a right.

For a network known for teen-centric shows, the CW raises more than a few eyebrows with its decidedly adult ads. Last year, it was the OMFG Gossip Girl ads, and now there's hubbub over its campaign for The Vampire Diaries, a teen vampire drama that debuts Sept. 10.

Specifically, the above ad - with the strategically placed boys (let me guess, one's a vampire, the other's not?!) - suggests a ménage à trois. Love does suck! Has the CW gone too far, or is this just the blood a new show needs?

Little People: "Midget" Just as Bad as a Racial Slur

The group Little People of America wants the FCC to ban the word "midget" from television, claiming that the word is just as offensive as a racial slur. The community maintains that "midget" carries a history of objectification of people who have been used as a visual gag because of a physical difference.

An episode of The Celebrity Apprentice, which aired this past Spring, has prompted the latest call for a ban. During the episode, contestants suggested washing "midgets" in All "small and mighty" detergent, and then hanging them out to dry. One contestant said: "They know that people point and laugh at them and they are comfortable within themselves and they have fun right back."

Whenever I see commercials or movies treating little people as props rather than people, I wonder two things. First: does anyone actually find it enjoyable to laugh at people just because they're different? And second: why is it still acceptable to ridicule little people in a so-called "politically correct" society that allegedly discourages degrading people for characteristics or circumstances they cannot control?
